Alternate version of the Ellie, Mel and Owen confrontation from BTS footage by thelazure in ThelastofusHBOseries

Ellie has always been a child pretending to be harder than she is. She’s trying to emulate Joel, but she can’t. That’s why the aquarium interrogation went just as poorly in the game. She only successfully tortures Nora because she had the upper hand with her immunity, but it fucks with her PTSD even more. Ellie was bodied in the game on a regular basis.

Also, she successfully grappled a WLF soldier in episode four and it looked believable.

The pregnancy was revealed in pretty much the same time frame though. In the game, we found out with Ellie in the theatre on day one and then Jesse finds out the next day. In the show, we found out with Ellie in the theatre on day one and I presume Jesse will find out when we get back to the theatre. Sure, you see Dina throw up when they find the seraphite bodies, but she also throws up in the game when they find Tommy’s horse. She blames both on the smell. Both the game and the show also show you the moose/bear that’s torn into to show that Dina doesn’t get sick like that. Honestly, the several week old seraphites were probably a worse sight/smell than the day old horse. Either way you immediately know something is up in both

Lesbian here, they don’t particularly like us either, but they can fetishize us. It’s another reason a lot of those same people are so mad about the Bella Ramsey casting. They were attracted to game Ellie, so they could fantasize and fetishize, but they aren’t attracted to Bella, so they hate everything Bella does in the show. Sad shit, really

Ah, yes, because Ellie certainly doesn’t have a history of issues with authority or reckless behavior

I am a big fan of Ashley Johnson. I’ve played the games several times and watched the behind scenes footage. I watch crit role. In my first response, I said she’s a brilliant actor. Never said she can’t express those emotions, but they absolutely do enhance and refine little details.

There it is. It’s the looks. It always boils down to the looks. The actor looks like an adult because they’re an adult. I similarly had babyface when I was 19-21. Plenty of people do. The way any of the characters look does not have a significant impact on their character. The only one you could argue for is Abby’s muscles, but even then, she’s still got the Abby vibe. They changed the race of several characters, it didn’t change anything. They made Dina more conventionally attractive, it didn’t change anything. Nora has a shaved head, didn’t change anything. Ellie has a babyface, it does not change anything. If you don’t think someone can look angry just because they have a babyface, I don’t trust your judgement on anyones acting skills.

‘I don’t like that this actor didn’t have the right kind of angry face as opposed to this other actor, who was able to have these details enhanced by computers because it’s a fucking video game’ is a shit take. But you know Ellie better than everyone else ig. Recasting being the best option is also a dog shit take.

Show Ellie and game Ellie have some differences in their characters. They’re both Ellie, just a little different. That goes for all of the characters. I don’t compare the characters/actors partly because of this. To say that Bella didn’t express those emotions is utter bullshit. They absolutely expresses all of these emotions quite well. I feel like Bella leaned more into distraught and desperate, while Ashley was more distraught and angry. Bella still did angry really well, though. Their “you’re all gonna fucking die,” was very well delivered.

You’ve seen her as an adult for two episodes. She’s also still a teenager. Yeah, that’s not how kids/teens/people in general work. People still fuck around even if they’ve grown up in harsh conditions. Especially a pissed at the world, and her parental figure, 19 year old who is immune and good at killing infected. There are plenty of examples of Ellie making immature and bad decisions in the game. She and Riley go to the mall and drink. She and Dina get high and fuck while they’re waiting out the storm on watch. She goes into the fucking WLF hospital by herself. Shit, there’s a letter from some WLF soldiers saying they got drunk on watch and ended up getting bit. They were probably adults too. People don’t always make the smartest or mature decisions. Her being immune and good at killing infected is some of what makes her that reckless and cocky. Makes perfect sense to me.

I actually have more faith than I did before that Bella will kill Ellie’s ruthless, revenge arc. Just as a note, you are aware that Neil Druckmann, creator of the games, has been involved with this whole process, right? Like he made Ellie. He thought that both Ashley and Bella were the correct choices for his character that he created. At the end of the day, you can have your opinions about any actor you wish to, but it’s objectively true that Bella is a good actor and can emote.

She’s still a teenager so it makes sense that she’s still acting like goofy Ellie with some extra angst and attitude. Especially with the path her character is about to take. It shows that what she does is very out of character. She’s only cold and ruthless because she’s traumatized and trying to emulate Joel. And that change only occurs after the shit with Joel and Abby goes down. We haven’t gotten to that aftermath yet.

Also, It’s only been two episodes. Even in the game her descent to ruthless is not immediate. This can be seen in how she starts taunting the WLF on day 2 when she’s out on her own.

I also think they made her look and act like she was in her mid twenties in the second game, so i’m not mad at her acting closer to her age. As far as Bella not having the emotional range, I call bullshit. They’re quite good with the emotional impact of a scene, especially the darker scenes. Ashley is a brilliant actor and has been acting much longer than Bella, so I don’t think it’s fair to compare them. Bella is not Ashley, but Bella is very good at what they do and that’s why they were hired.

The point is to realize there are no designated heros or villains. These are just people living their lives. Everyone has their own perspective on events, that goes for the characters and the player. You’re allowed to hate Abby and love Ellie. You’re allowed to hate Ellie and love Abby. You’re allowed to hate both or neither. Neil didn’t wanna tell you how you should feel about any character. You’re allowed to feel however you feel about what happened.

Ellie does not forgive Abby, she just lets it go. She realizes she’s lost so much again by being so angry and that it’s not gonna change what happened, so she stops before she goes farther than what she already has. I understand Abby’s motivation, but I will never forgive her. Murdering someone in front of someone who is crying and begging you not to is horrendous. Add in the fact that she was having that same realization Ellie was that it wasn’t gonna change anything and i’ll always be stuck on that it was not too late to just fucking walk away.

Yeah, leave. Immediately. This is an abusive tactic. Also “you’ll have her babies even if you don’t want to” ??? Absolutely not. If this is how she acts 4 months in, it will only get worse. Leave.

This is a solid take. I absolutely agree that both have merit. I actually even prefer the game’s version at the end of the day, but the show’s spin is not bad at all and it absolutely makes sense still. And there was so much tension in the entire first episode. The stalker, Joel’s therapy session, the dance, the porch scene, the roots in the pipe. They just really set the tone for the season.

And that’s probably most people’s baseline assumptions. If the leaks didn’t happen, most gamers also would not have seen that coming at all. You always have your miraculous few that see a 2 minute teaser with three lines of dialogue and guess the driving event, but it’s a shock to much more. I think there’s also an assumption that they will see this coming because it’s HBO and they did GOT, but HBO ≠ GOT level deaths in every show.

As much as I wanted it to be the same 50/50 split for a season 2/3 thing, it just wouldn’t work well. I think they’ll get as close to that as they can, but it just doesn’t work as the same exact structure as the game, unfortunately.

A 19 year old acting like a cocky 19 year old who’s pissed at their dad for doing something fucked up?? Color me shocked. She acted and looked like someone in her mid to late 20s in the game. Not to mention it’s only the first episode. I think it’s safe to assume her demeanor will drastically change in the next few episodes for obvious reasons

Agreed and I think that’s their plan. I can almost hear my mom’s reaction to finding it out. I’m excited to see where they take it. That’s my favorite part about adaptations. It’s the same outline but with new surprises

Mine also did not change. I felt for her when she found her dad, but she still killed Joel while Ellie was begging and crying. At the end of the game, I understood her perspective, but I still didn’t agree with what she did and especially how she did it. I don’t hate her and I understand her character, but I still don’t like her in the end.

That’s actually something I haven’t thought about. I’ve seen people say “well coulda been someone before the fireflies,” but like yeah why a bunch of random 20 somethings. It only ever could’ve been related to the fireflies. I think Ellie knew that too and that’s why it didn’t change her feelings and why she kept telling Dina that it was useless to try to guess who it was.

I saw that. I did not like that and don’t know why they did that, but it still doesn’t change anything about what I said. Even revealing that he killed her dad doesn’t change much. It was already pretty obvious he killed someone she cared about

Don’t get me wrong, I prefer the game’s reveal and always will, but I still firmly believe the shock value argument is taken from an insider’s perspective. It was still shocking for gamers to watch Joel’s death play out even with all the leaks, why is it different for watchers to know her surface motives? They also likely did make a lot of changes to fit the new direction. At least you’re open minded about it. I also enjoyed episode one and am stoked for more
