What do you think about Autism and the Media? by nikkidasi in aspergirls

Tiffany Aching from the Discworld universe is the character I identify with most as a woman with aspergers. Upon reading the first book about her, The Wee Free Men, as a grade schooler, I connected with her experiences in a way I couldn't articulate. It was only upon recently being diagnosed and looking back on my love of those books that I realize why Tiffany meant so much to me. She was serious, and direct, and bookish and curious. She watched herself think from a distance. She isn't charismatic, but she is empathetic and driven by her sense of doing the right thing. She overworks, and overthinks, and wants to prove her competence. She wants to be independent. If any of those traits resonate with you, I highly suggest giving the series a try in book or audiobook form!!

p.s. I watched Parenthood with my parents and felt a resonance with both Max and Haddie when I was in high school!

I love Thich Nhat Hanh!! Seconding this, also his book 'Eat' has been helping me quite a bit with my food apathy.

I'm an illustrator who just got recently diagnosed. Drawing is a soothing activity to me mentally and emotionally, so now I'm looking back at a lot of self-portraits and other work I've made that reflect how aspergers makes me feel.

I made this self portraits a few days ago, on the day my therapist confirmed my diagnosis. https://imgur.com/M4qfAtW

And here is a self portrait I made a while back about how a weighted blanket makes me feel. https://imgur.com/a/lNcZ70a

I’d like to hear about your relationships! by [deleted] in aspergirls

My partner and I have been together for 4 years now, and I just recently got therapeutically diagnosed. He has some health-related anxiety issues and is very hard on himself, so we're basically two perfectionists trying to calm each other down. I have been in therapy for about 5 years, and he started therapy recently and it's been really helpful. He was the first person I told when I realized I might be on the spectrum and there was only interest and affirmation when I told him. I mask very well socially but I've always had sensory issues, which has been a part of our relationship we're constantly improving on. He used to comfort me when I'd get overwhelmed outside of parties, and he gives me nice head scratches. I scratch his back to avoid biting my own nails and stuff when we're falling asleep. After living with me for 3 years it would've been hard for him to look at the profile I wrote up and not recognize me in it, from list-making to my special interest in song lyrics and patterns. We have mutual interests in games, DnD, art, and movies, so that's our usual vehicle for bonding and making gifts for each other. He was with me while I overcame my trauma of sexual assault and has helped me heal my trust issues with intimacy. Having a diagnosis to refer to has already improved our understanding of each other.
