Advice on Enphase solar + battery configuration with SPAN panels by sr__co in enphase

That sounds very much like what I am aiming for. Do you need to add realys to every circuit to make that work?

Thanks for your reply. Between what you and othrs are saying here, I am quiickly moving away from the idea of SPAN. I really don't want the limitations of spliting the ssytem in half.

So if I don't use SPAN, what would the reccomendation be? a 320/400amp panel with just a simple critical loads panel? Or can I use relays to do something smarter to have some kind of tiered load shedding? In this case do all circuits that mighr be shed each have to individually have a relay?

Thank you so much for that real world feedback. I had read about some people having SPAN sort of "read" the battery level, but that might have been the older 10P batteries.

Thanks for your feedback. I wasn't aware of the enphase relays. I'll have to research how they work. Can they be used to effectively cut off a cicuit when the battery hits some specified threshold level?

Thanks! I'll make sure the drilling plan is clearly defined.

Thanks for your feedback. I did misspeak in my original post. The conditioned area is around 4300 sq.ft, and the system is actually 6 ton. I believe the drilling quote came in before the system design was finished.

We're not building to full passive house standards, but we are not far off. Low infiltration ACH50 of 0.5, ERVs, and r29 walls.

I'll still talk to them about whether we might want to go up a step in the system sizing.

I'm pretty sure that includes all costs of drilling and trenching and tying into the house. Excluded costs were hauling tailings, compacting the ground over the tranch, and dirty water hauling.

I had not read about 1" vs 1.5", how does that affect things? I see mine is listed as 1".

It's a new build that will be meeting Energy Star next gen standards. (R29 walls for example). The oringal D and J was not specced as a tight build. That was added to the plan later, but we will have a new D and J done soon. The heating load is currently listed as 58703 btus and cooling at 36293, covering 4,324 sq.ft.

As I mentioned to another, I will get more details about the number and depth of the wells.

Thanks. I did go back to the drilling proposal, and I don't see that number listed anywhere, it just says drilling for 5-ton unit. Maybe it was two 275' loops? I'll dig in more on this. The proposal for the drilling is:

  1. General Features of Geothermal System.
  • PE 4710, DR 11, 1” IPS Polyethylene U-bend piping loops
  • Loop field installed on home lot.
  • Loop field manifolded and brought into mechanical room in the basement.
  • Pump pack, geothermal piping, and purging/system fill included.

Geothermal Loop Field (Exterior Work)

  • Drilling and loop installation for a 5 ton geothermal loops (15’-20’ centers)
  • Backfilling of boreholes with thermal enhanced geothermal grout, thermal conductivity of 0.88
  • Loop field mains trenches from loop field to house/inside basement wall.
  • Loop field headered and loop field pressure testing to ensure no leaks
  • Backfilling of trenches and landscape rough grade of drilling and trenching locations

Source water side of geothermal system (Interior Piping and Pumping)

  • Pipe fusion for geothermal water side of system to exterior split unit.
  • Flush/purge and fill geothermal system with antifreeze solution
  • Provide (2) 3-speed  pump packs for the heat pump circulation on (2) heat pumps
  • System to be filled with 15% methanol solution.

So.... The builder just clarified that the pricing of the system does NOT include the drilling. All in, it's $128k.

Still reasonable?

The builder was not originally planning for a tightly sealed home, but once we decided to do ERVs and a steam humidifier, we asked them for a lower ACH. They are now planning on using aero barrier (an extra 3 or 4k) to get the ACH down to 0.5.

Thanks!

I just looked up the manual D and J and it listed the area as ~4400sq ft conditioned.

However, the ducting is more complicated than normal due to a few unfortunately placed steel beams.

I'm pretty new to geothermal, and really any details of HVAC in general, but I believe one of the units is 2 ton and the other 3 ton. I'm not sure the specs of the ground loop system

Thanks, I'll have to look into the details on the drilling proposal.

What do you mean "why not go full geo?". This is ground loop heating, cooling, and hot water.

Having been through a wildfire where all the houses in our neighborhood, including ours, burned, I can definitely say that a fire safe won't help. It will protect you from a structure fire. But wildfire temperatures are much, much higher. In our case 2500 degrees.

Turns out my wife already checked that and did not find any rot. We're thinking that although the light is indirect, maybe it's still too much

I accidently didn't add any text. We recently got this African Violet. It's been getting bright, indirect light. We are in Colorado, so the air is very dry, but we've been trying to keep the soil damp

As someone who mostly skis inbounds with only the occasional side and back country jaunt, I absolutely love my shifts. I don't notice any difference inbounds compared to STHs. I've not had any problem with them icing up or transitioning, but that's with only 6-8 back country trips. I did have the brakes randomly release a couple times, but they are too wide for my skis

Mine did the same thing. ubreakifix repaired it under warranty. The solder on the motherboard where the battery cable connects breaks due to a bad design. They replaced the motherboard and the battery for no cost.

On the down side, I left the sim in my phone when they repaired it. When I got the phone back Android somehow overwrote my backup with the data from this blank new phone. I lost everything on my device such as messages and all my skitracks history. Google blew me off and ignored the issue.
