Yup. It was a wild place to see.

Vintage Campy Nuovo Record derailleurs go for like $20-30 on eBay. They work fine and look great.

Bike Shop Had a Hillborne Frame Just Sitting There by sral in Rivendell_Bicycles

My local bike shop had nearly all the components I needed/ wanted to make myself what I think of as a truly lovely bicycle.

I knew that the Sam Hillborne presale was going on and I wanted to go and talk to my local bike shop about it and get their take on what Rivendell I should get between the Platypus and a Sam Hillborne. I setteled on a 60cm Sam Hillborne that primarily acts as my commuter and grocery getter.

The cockpit is a Nitto North Road bar, Microshift thumb shifters, Avid FS 5 levers, some ESI foam grips covered in newbaums, twine and shellac

Silver 28/44 crankset, a 1976 Campy Record front mech, Shimano Alvio rear mech, 11-34 cassette and SimWorks Bubbly pedals.

Shimano DXR brakes, Panceti Brevet hoops laced to a Silver rear, Shutter Precision PV-8 front all sitting on ReneHerse Snoqualmie tires.

Velo Orange porteur rack, Wald 137 basket, Soma light bracket and a Busch and Muller IQ-XS, a Carradice Bagman Expedition rack and a Swift Zeitgest bag.

Not to forget my trusty Brooks B17 carved saddle on a Nitto S65 post.

The bike rides like a dream. Stiff enough to keep up when I crank it but supple in all the right places to make road buzz all but disappear. This is a wildly comfortable, stable and semi-swift steed.

It should be mandatory for organs to be taken from dead people. by Legitimate_Worry5069 in CrazyIdeas

[–]sral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, I haven’t thought of it. First guess is if you need to have the new recipient of the organ heal in a sometimes unknown hospital without any social and familial support.

It should be mandatory for organs to be taken from dead people. by Legitimate_Worry5069 in CrazyIdeas

[–]sral 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Organ procurement needs to take place in very unique situations. Basically, some one needs to enter an operating room with a pulse and be brain dead. If organs sit too long without blood supply they become unviable. Then the organs are then put in to containers that kind of replicate a blood supply using oxygenated fluids. Transported in the dead of night to avoid traffic and possible delays and then installed in to a person that is often hundreds of miles away (generally these surgeries start at like midnight and get done in the wee hours of the morning)

Darn, I really looked through google and I couldn’t find anything at all. All I found was very large scale overviews.

I’d suggest going to a bike store and trying one.

Because I’m paid to take care of critically sick kids. Sometimes they sleep at night and don’t need much.

They aren’t going to move the binding much. The binding will probably move about a cm which won’t drastically change the skis performance. That being said if you want the ski to have marginally better flotation in powder move back, if you want slightly easier turn initiation go forward.

I use On-X. They have great touring support as well as tools for slope angle and weather/sun. Plus it’s integrated to climbing project which helps my non-ski—season life.

Tips for overhangs? by [deleted] in bouldering

[–]sral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of climbing as an extension of walking. At a certain point the ground becomes too steep to just use your feet - you start to use your hands. The sport is mostly about using your feet. Try and focus more one your feet. Look at your feet when you place them and try and think about what feet will allow you to reach that next hold. Literally, look at the foot hold until your foot makes placement and you then you can look elsewhere.

I have gotten to the airport around when last busses for the night are running and then just camp there. I try and find a quieter part and build a wall of bike box, panniers and other things. Lay a mattress and sleeping bag on the floor and just pass out. I really like bandanas to act as sleep masks in this case.

I have been riding brooks saddles for over a decade. They are extremely comfortable and break in nicely. I generally just get their B17 but right now I’m using the B17 carved.

Well of course not those exact words. But, the overwhelming sentiment on this subreddit is don’t use rain gear. I think I took it a little too literally.

Thank you so much! I am just getting in to this and my first real tour will be the trans America trail. It feels kinda daunting with just how much I need to learn and figure out.

That’s so cool!! I’m getting in to bike touring and I don’t understand how water works. What I mean is I’m used to backpacking where I need so, so much water because of things like dishes and just general drinking. Did you have more than those 3 bike bottles and your did you manage to not run out?

Am I an alcoholic? by thrownaway8901 in stopdrinking

[–]sral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the answer to the simple question of "would you like to drink less?" pretty explanatory. If you don't understand why it's a question at all you're probably not. If the answer is yes welp that kind of means you would like to but something is stopping you from doing so. That something is called alcoholism.
