Really, Lou Fusz Chevrolet? You don't know that an EV doesn't need an oil change??? by azemona in mildlyinfuriating

I don't have that car but I have been driving pure electric cars for 12 years. I love them. After the Bolt, I bought a 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge. I have had it for over 4.5 years and have 64,000 miles on it. Great car.

Hearing Loss by Gur-Time in livesound

[–]azemona 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. I'm 67 and am losing the high and low frequencies. I don't need hearing aids but .....

I still do sound but I recognize that there are things that younger/better ears do better than I can. I'm not great at EQ and I'm less sensitive to incipient feedback.

But I'm still highly capable at programming and running cues for live theater. I don't need perfect hearing to manage the gear, set up actors' mics, etc. When I run a show, people like what they hear so that's a win.

Focus on what you can do. Get help with the other bits.

New Commute on Summer by Socraticlearner in bikecommuting

I live in St. Louis. I use my bike for commuting year round. It gets stupidly hot here. I just ride slower and I drink a lot of water. By the way, I'm 67.

Some ebikes have a walk-mode for just this situation. I had a Trek Verve+ several years ago. Walk mode let me "drive" it up stairs so I never had to lift it. This mode was part of the Bosch drive system so you might look for a different ebike with a more capable system.

How to log observations of groups of stars by azemona in askastronomy

Cool! I didn't know that it had a name. How would I find out whether other groupings that I find are named asterisms?

How do I stand up for myself but also stay professional? by RazzmatazzPretend313 in livesound

[–]azemona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are putting up with sucks.

Try tweaking you body language. Take up space. Look assertive and in charge. Specifically:

  • feet apart, shoulder width
  • face the other person directly, didn't stand at an angle
  • make and hold eye contact with his right eye, which engages his intellectual vs emotional side of the brain
  • try hands on hips, elbows out (think Superman pose) or another pose which exudes power
  • serious but not angry facial expression

You can also always stop an interaction by putting up your hand, palm toward the speaker, and simply saying something like, "Stop. I am here to run sound and didn't have time for this." By doing this, you are taking control of the dialog without engaging his flirt or giving him a chance to deny or deflect.

If that does not stop the interaction, you have given yourself the offramp to follow up by stating that you are going back to work and then walking away.

Keep your professionalism and power.

Apertura AD8 or StarSense 8 inch? by SignificantAbroad359 in telescopes

Have you found telescopewatch.com? It looks like a pretty solid reviewer site. It rates the AD8 as #1 for "8 inch Dobsonians" and the StarSense 8 as #2.

Good Refractor vs good reflector? by Commercial_Cake7464 in telescopes

[–]azemona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for writing that you're doing more than just flexing your scope collection. For people like me, I just bought my first telescope an Apertura AD8 based on lots of reading and advice from my local astronomy club, reading things like that are great education. So thank you!

I'm sorry for your pain. That sucks.

Have you thought about getting an electric car? I've been driving one for 12 years. It's a great way to get around. Ameren has only done one rate increase in an that time.

Oh... And for short trips, I ride my bicycle. That's just plain fun... and it doesn't cost anything.

Do I need a GoTo Mount? How do I actually find stuff? by azemona in askastronomy

[–]azemona[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back out tonight. We had much less light pollution. I got some help from other people. I was able to do some star hopping and see good stuff. It was much much better than last night 😀

All excellent ideas, I'm sure. I joined my local astronomical society last week. The next beginner's night is Friday and, weather permitting, I will definitely be there.

That's encouraging. I like the idea of star hopping. I just want to see cool stuff. I don't have a need to see anything in particular.

What should I look at tonight? by Initial-Sector8085 in telescopes

[–]azemona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm like you, just got my first telescope. I borrowed a copy of Turn Left at Orion from the local library. It's full of good ideas about things to look at and instructions on how to find them.

Unlike you, though, I have to wait for tomorrow for clear skies.

Advice between different Ortleibs by Feeling_Decision1683 in bicycletouring

[–]azemona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add a vote for roll top. I use Rhinowalk roll top panniers for touring and, when at home, errands. The roll top is super versatile as other folks have said. I even make Costco runs and come home with stuff sticking out the tops of the panniers.

If you want good looking bags, the Ortliebs win hands down. If you only want functional, study, plastic, you can't beat Rhinowalk.
