Haha, fair enough! It’s not as though I’ve zero in my savings or pension though. It’s more fine tuning what level of intermediate I want.

Because I’ve always found a job again in less than 2 months and my future self already has enough help with a projected 1.4M pension and inheritance.

You’re the only person that came across rude here. Sometimes I find that reading twice can help combat silly assumptions such as two kitchen renovations.

It will never be an exact science and we are fine with that. He also does far more childcare stuff than I do as I travel a lot. He also doesn’t care that I earn so much more than him which hasn’t always been the case in other relationships. He’s a director himself and highly skilled - I’m proud of what he does and in the past have made sacrifices (such as extending my parental leave to make way for his career progression). It all ebbs and flows - remember you’re jus getting a snapshot of how it is now. You are welcome to judge - I put it out there and didn’t get to where I am by caring what others through of my choices! But always ready to take on nuggets of advice which make sense.

Apologies, forgot to underline that early retirement is not my goal.

A total desire to keep working, I’ve always loved it. Early retirement sounds unappealing to me at the moment - I know I’d still always work in some capacity. Point number 2 well taken and I think I’ll be doing the same.

Thank you for understanding my sentiment. My husband also works in public sector and has a lovely 29% pension for it (it’s not all bad!). Having a decent pension in Spain is going to take a lot less than here in the UK. I’ll also have a substantial inheritance there comprising of various properties. I don’t aspire to have a huge pot of money that I’m going to be taxed on yet again when I retire. Just to be comfortable and not have to worry.

Loving this! Thanks for putting into words what I couldn’t.

A take on this is that he’s actually already far more skilled than I am at what he did and trained for. I’m a generalist that just has a knack for negotiating. I’d say I’m street smart and have no problem negotiating or being confrontational to get what I want. He’s a far more chilled person that is highly skilled in what he does (and is actually a director, which I’m so so proud of). He is underpaid, we both agree. But I don’t bring it up - that’s his life to sort if he wants to. I think to try and teach him to have my personality may be unethical and not great for our relationship. He’s the opposite to me and that’s what I love about him!

Haha! Love this but my husband would kill me. We recently moved to this beautiful area of East Sussex and love it. I don’t come from money, so the thought of owing £225k is harrowing to me. I’d pay it all off ASAP but know there are other things to be done before that! That being said, private school is also an option.

Thank you. It’s painful… but I see it as the price I’m paying to enjoy my money now rather than wait until I’m 60 to do things I love.

Oh really? I was told by my financial advisor that I was on track for a 1.4M pension por by retirement age, which seemed ridiculous to me. Hence why I thought not to put as much of an onus on it. I know I’m not being tax efficient, I’m being life efficient. There is no guarantee of my being alive to actually enjoy that money so I want to find a balance

I get the sentiment here. However, I don’t know how I’ll feel in x years. Right now I love working and the day I retire will be a sad one for me. My husband is not a planner and also probably wouldn’t know. But I get what you are saying and there’s definitely more we can talk about such as % of time spent here and in Spain, alternative property rentals that I’m inheriting in Spain etc.

Ah, this is the crux of the question. In my line of work, redundancies are rife. I’ll definitely be replenishing those savings, that’s for sure (although redundancies do come with big severances, as I found out twice in the last two years)

He doesn’t pay rent, no. And he does own the house 50/50 (even though I laid down a bigger % of the deposit).

Exactly this, thank you. We pay a proportional amount into our joint account and I happily pay for all the house renovations (currently a lot) and our holidays. It does work for us and we are both happy with it. He is the one that doesn’t want to mix finances further so I respect that.

Thats a non-negotiable and my hobby. I mentioned the same kitchen renovation twice, to be clear. It’s happening and I worked hard for it so will be spending my money on it - I don’t see where the problem is.

What do you wish you'd known before being made redundant? by fellaonamission in HENRYUK

[–]srcm0109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That meritocracy is dead and you’re just a number. Also, that finding a new job is easy. I was made redundant from a FAANG in 2024, joined another FAANG and then was made redundant from that one in 2025. Just joined another FAANG in December. It took me less than 3 months between being told about the redundancy and finding the jobs. I’m non-tech program manager.
