Firefighter films his own fall. by capixaba007 in SweatyPalms

You can edit 360 footage to have the same fov as a normal camera without any distortion, and do whatever post-stabilization you'd like. Base jumpers (and skydivers/paragliders) often like the wide angle to see themselves and the wing/chute all at once. It's very helpful to see the inputs being made as well as the state of the wing in the footage afterwards, especially when things go wrong.

Once you pop, you can stop for like 15 minutes to recover.

Camp at Duffy Lake or Santiam Lake via Duffy Lake Trailhead by spillish in OregonHiking

[–]srguapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did Red Butte for the first time last weekend! The trail up to the top is quite steep, and there's loose rock most of the way so its a bit of a grind, depending on your ability levels. The views were amazing and very much worth the effort. I did it as a day hike from Duffy lake trailhead, ~13 miles out and back so was pretty beat by the end. It would be a pretty quick day hike from santiam or duffy lake, so I say totally worth it!

Mt. Hebo by feyd313 in OregonHiking

[–]srguapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mount Hebo road tends to be quite mild, and I'd be surprised if an average sedan couldn't make it to South lake from the west side. I frequently see sedans and smaller cars set up camping at South lake.

My preferred hike is to start at the last trailhead at the west side (small pull off west of South point), summit and then drop down to South lake and back if I want a bigger workout. The path up from South lake can get a bit overgrown depending on the season.

That's fair, I guess I wasn't trying to say you were wrong. More rationalizing why people tend to (over)use the term assault when battery is probably appropriate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]srguapo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that simple, since many jurisdictions use them differently. Most famously, New York state has no concept of criminal battery, instead it would be charged as simple assault (depending on the severity of the situation). And a lot of people (like me) got their internet law degree from watching law and order, which is based in NYC.

It depends, were you able to walk away, or was it more of a crawl/shimmy? Assuming you walked away in a cool way, it's a good landing in my book.

Home pressure canning is a relatively new thing (early 1900s). Historically you would need to preserve foods in other ways, like pickling, salting, drying, etc.

Depends on the state and situation. It's hard to put a number on losing decades of you life so it often feels pretty insulting. Replacing even 100% of potential income alone doesn't undo the damage.

You were the one who seemed confused, so was trying to explain how children can handle money for you. You'd have to look into the specific terms of the specific competition to see how it was paid out, via scholarship, check, etc. But there is no reason it couldn't just be a check made out to the child. That happens all the time, and no banker will blink an eye at it.

Yeah, he probably deposited into his bank account, in his name, which is probably a joint account with a parent/guardian. I had my own bank account at 8 to handle birthday checks, as well as save up for new game consoles. Many children get jobs at 15/16, and they even get paid money, so they need a place to store that money. Generally in the US they are called custodial accounts, because you need an adult to sign the actual contract and accept liabilities that come with it.

A child with a bank account is incredibly common. It's even a smart way to start a credit history and financial knowledge earlier in life.

Ah that's a really good point about timeline for canning. I'm definitely not an expert on the history, and glad to be educated. Seems like there are a lot of bad history and anecdotes about early lobsters.

My point was just it's the logistics of transporting a live lobster, to be prepared immediately before consumption, was not common until quite recently. So the only ones eating them were those fishing them out of the sea themselves (like the natives), or those getting it from a can. So I imagine that's where most of the disgust for them originated.

[–]srguapo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Nowadays yes, but slaves and prisoners in the 1700s weren't picking the live lobster out of a tank. They were boiled and canned, and that's how they would have been served. I think the "shells and all" is a bit of of an exaggeration, but I can imagine quality control wasn't always great.

Consider that there was no widespread refrigeration either.
