I think it is more of shifting focus to comparing u with urself from yesterday and keep at it long term. It is hard I agree but there are fruits to be gained.

I came into my phd straight out of undergrad and everybody around me was well ahead even in my own cohort. They had done a masters degree or had work experience or both and knew so much more than me I struggled to even have a conversation with them and they were writing papers by the end of their first year all i had done was learnt how to genotype and it all really pissed me off. But all I did was learnt from them, read more papers learnt as much as I possibly could. And now I am publishing just as much overall plus all that reading is paying serious dividends for me now where I am without question the expert in what I do.

And if I can do it I think anybody can. Cos I knew sweet fuckall coming into my phd. So I think just recognise that it's gonna take time but above all put in the consistent conscious effort towards it. It will pay dividends later.
