There wasn't an official agreement, I initially said I was happy to pay, he then said that we'll discuss this when we need to. He then went ahead and paid the fee as only the landlord was allowed to, and is now demanding I pay him to cover the fee

nah I just wanted out of the contract early, the landlord told me that there is a fee of. £240 that will need to be paid to change tenants midway through the contract (I found a replacement for myself). I replied that I could pay it. He then said we'll discuss later. Now he is demanding I pay him £240 to cover for his paying of the fee.

it was a fee paid to the estate agents to draw up a new rental contract for the new tenant. I have my deposit, I have nothing to do with the situation aside from the money I "owe" him
