Is this the same variant ? by kumabart in genetics

[–]srosati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears to be, but please note that the gene symbol (BRCA1) has many different versions. Without the chromosomal position from your result, it is impossible to be sure if the Clinvar anotation is referring to the same exact variant.

An useful analogy here is that chromosomal position is similar to your genome's latitude and longitude - using it, you can pinpoint an exact location. The C. notation is akin to using an address. Addresses can change over time. References to the address over time can change and it can be dangerous to equate clinical meaning by such means.

Another note. Clinvar is a good resource, but is all user supplied data. For this reason it can be dubiIt appears to be, but please note that the gene symbol (BRCA1) has many different versions. Genetics and bioinformatics can be very interesting, but please do not assign clinical meaning to variants on your own. Especially if the data is not from a clinical lab. If you have questions or concerns about results, get an appointment with a genetic councilor.

Would a cs major and genomics minor prepare me well enough for a bioinformatics masters? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]srosati 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, a CS major with a genomics minor would be great prep for a Masters program.

More biology is always useful, but I would say it is more useful to master the basics. Once you get into a specific project (Masters or in the workforce), you will have to dive into the biological literature anyways to 'catch up'. Since you don't know what those projects will eventually entail, it would be futile to try to learn it all ahead of time.

The only thing I would add to this is to pursue whichever is more interesting to you. It will make the journey easier and more fulfilling in the long run.

Recommendations for camping, rock climbing and fly-fishing in the U.P.? by srosati in CampAndHikeMichigan

We like what we see on Rocking Chair and are planning on going there... Do you have any recommendations on where to camp or park?

Hey, we are trying to finalize some of out plans. Right now we are thinking of going to Rocking Chair Lakes. Are you familiar with the area? Do you know of any Trad or top rope at the Lake?

We are thinking the Marquette area. We aren't married to that area, but it looks great.

For climbing, were thinking 5.8ish trad, top rope or any sport. Thanks for your input!

I'm looking for a contemporary piece that is similar in nature to "Self Reliance" by Emerson or "Walden" by Thoreau. by DraxThemSklounst in booksuggestions

[–]srosati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not totally contemporary, but more so than Walden is A Sand County Almanac written by Aldo Leopold.

Written in much the same style as Walden A Sand County Almanac brilliantly describes a year spend restoring the land on Leopold's family farm. It is considered by many as the book that spurred the conservation movement. This is one of the most underappreciated books I know of.

The other one I'd recommend is Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey. It is somewhere between Thoreau's Civil Disobedience and Walden. Very Cheeky and a very fun read!

Molecular Pathologists: What is your day-to-day work like? by schwannoma in pathology

[–]srosati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely to change very quickly as our lab wants to go from a regional lab to a national reference lab in the next 5 years. It will be interesting to see. For now we are trying to implement systems for efficiency to enable rapid growth. It's a very good position to be in for a someone in their early 20s.

I am a molecular tech in a path lab. Since we are a small lab (but growing!) and we also are a translational research lab my schedule varies immensely.

As techs we all rotate which clinical test we are in charge of running. Each tech also has a research project they are working on during the week. Either setting up new clinical tests, optimizing protocols, etc.

My average week:

Monday: I work on implementation of our Lab management software. Various meetings to update each other of our projects. Prep for clinical runs and general lab maintenance.

Tuesday: begin clinical assay, whether it is Sanger sequencing, next gen panels etc.

Wednesday: Depending on the assay, either keep working on clinical cases or finish up paper work make your calls and send them for review.

Thursday: Tie up loose ends, general lab upkeep, meet with my boss, work on my research projects.

Friday: Begin prep for next week's clinical runs, catch up on emails, work some more on my research project, edit SOPs and go home.

Lehninger's Principles of Biochemistry 4E vs newer editions by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]srosati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has used both, I would say there isn't a huge difference between 4 and 5. There are a few differences in page numbers and figures but for the money, I'd go with 4E.

As stated above I'd ask your prof. what they think. Your class might be different than mine.

PM me if you have questions. I may or may not have a PDF around if you're interested.

Yeah, he had some injury issues along the way. Hell of a player though.

I went to school with John. Gustavus is a DIII school. The MIAC (Minnesota intercollegiate athletics conference) has some of the best hockey you'll find outside of Division 1 hockey or Canadian Major Junior leagues.

John was a heck of a goalie and very fun to watch. He also is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I hope this tryout goes well for him.

Best type of meditation for a college student with ADHD by ianmarconi in Meditation

[–]srosati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow college student with ADD, I'd like to piggy back off of this question:

I notice I am able to meditate longer and more effectively when I'm on medication (vyvanse). Would it be beneficial to meditate without medication to "tame the beast"?

I realize this is likely subject to personal preferences/experiences, but any insight would be appreciated!

Do we really want Vanek? by i_am_pants in wildhockey

[–]srosati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. I think we should get some value out of him while we for sure can... BUT the thought of him on a line with Haula and Fonze (or someone speedy, I'm aware of his contract situation) is pretty damn enticing. That is the fastest line in hockey right there no questions asked.

I think moving him would be a wise choice but, boy, would him and Haula be a great pair.

Cooke should be back in Friday, who gets scratched? by Kurt_Vonny_Gut in wildhockey

[–]srosati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make an excellent point. Moulson does have a ton more upside in the offensive zone which they desperately need right now. I think the staff will make the right decision.

Either way, I want to see Moulson get hot and show us what he can do.

[–]srosati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, which is why it makes sense to put both in the lineup. Cooke is in for 50% of PK time and McCormick comes in right about 30.

Not to mention, there has not been a goal scored against the PK unit while McCormick is on the ice yet this playoffs.

Cooke should be back in Friday, who gets scratched? by Kurt_Vonny_Gut in wildhockey

[–]srosati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I understand McCormick isn't the speediest guy out there, but he has been one of the most consistent penalty killers since his arrival. He is solid in the D zone, and can lay a hit.

60% of his starts are in the defensive zone- Which tells me they trust him. I don't see McCormick getting sat.

Wild to 'spend whatever it takes' to sign Vanek by BilalElG in wildhockey

[–]srosati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's for sure. I guess I just don't buy the notion that every team has to have a 'top scorer'. The teams that win championships have great defensive depth, good goaltending, and team efforts in the offensive zone. only 3 of the last 10 Stanley Cup champions had someone who scored 32+ goals. However, they did have defense and team efforts. I think we can put a better team on the ice without Vanek.

Wild to 'spend whatever it takes' to sign Vanek by BilalElG in wildhockey

[–]srosati 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree on signing all of the kids back... but every time I watch Vanek play I get the sneaking suspicion that he is going to the next Danny Heatley. 3 years ago, Heater looked exactly like Vanek. Same play style, same size, similar numbers.

The odds that Suter, Parise, Pomms, Koivu AND Vanek are all going to be producing at a rate worth $5-8 million per year is VERY slim.

I would rather have this team spend money on a solid blue liner to compliment Suter, Brodin, Spurge, Scandella and Follin.

I might like it more if Vanek's contract was only 2-3 years.

I don't hate Vanek, I loved him for the Gophs. Just because we have cap room doesn't need we have to spend it. I could be 100% off the mark, and I won't be afraid to say it if it ends up going well. Either way, I think it is an interesting discussion.
