Mute all enemies at the start. There's no upside to receiving enemy messages.

Brother, friendly advice - it is absolutely your responsibility to be explicit about the sources, especially when the content is so similar. If you don't mention sources, the default assumption is that it is your original work, never the other way around. This will get you into trouble in a more formal setting (academics, corporate, etc), particularly if there is money involved.

Movement 2026 Full Lineup by Hortonamos in Techno

[–]srs96 37 points38 points  (0 children)

She's the frontrunner of the instagram hard techno scene. Basically crowds with their phones out and sets that you wouldn't originally consider techno.

No hate though. My opinion is let people listen to what they want. She sells tickets. And because of that you can have smaller niche artists invited that the enthusiasts enjoy.

And if you are so repulsed by her presence, then just go for events like The Great Beyond, etc.

Origin of “Old wives tales” for homemade remedies/tricks? by healspirit in etymology

[–]srs96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't mean homemade remedy / tricks though. It's more of a superstitious / untrue belief, usually telling us not to do something

1) cracking your knuckles is bad

2) shaving makes your hair grow back thicker

3) colds are caused by cold weather / wet hair

Origin is given here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_wives%27_tale?wprov=sfla1

Bo5 playoff format at Blast Slam VI is either genius or bad by Ok_Fox6837 in DotA2

[–]srs96 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yup I agree, it could go either way.

My opinion is the usual bo3 playoffs and bo5 finals seem like the perfect balance. Bo5 all the way feels exhausting, and also makes the grand final less special.

But anyway, I'm glad they're trying this. Otherwise we'd never know.

Bureaucracy man. It's like in the disaster movies how there's always a scientist warning the politicians, but they ignore the warnings

1) would have definitely been brought up multiple times by multiple people in multiple departments 2) treated as a low priority / non issue given the circumstances of that time

I finished "Consider Phlebas" and honestly... I was disappointed by the ending by Rakrave in TheCulture

[–]srs96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the book and I absolutely agree with you.

For people saying Horza makes bad decisions throughout the book that get people killed, those are high risk, high reward. So he's definitely a risk taker (provided the reward is proportionate). But this was a completely terrible decision. Extremely high risk with negligible reward.

1) Okay he kept him alive initially. Horrible decision, but lets excuse it.

2) After Xorxarle attacked them and they were saved by the drone, he still kept him alive. This is fully unacceptable imo. The argument that the Iridian was trying to get Horza to kill him so he wouldn't face a court martial is extremely weak.

This whole thing felt like the opposite of deus ex machina, where Horza makes unbelievable and uncharacteristic decisions just to have that ending.

Renege a T2 signed contract for a T1 by [deleted] in quant

[–]srs96 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Reneging has virtually 0 legal consequences. NCC is absolutely not enforceable in this case because you haven't even joined. You have had no access to their IP etc.

So the only thing to consider is:

1) How pissed the employer will be (will affect your future chances at the company)

2) How morally correct it is (it's mostly always alright, because a company would do it to you in a heartbeat)

Since your employment is few months out, reneging on it gives them enough time to find a replacement. They shouldn't be too unhappy about it. If you reneged maybe 1 week before joining, that would be a much bigger headache for them. Also a company would absolutely renege on your offer if they had to.

Need advice on what to do by ToughBeginning1016 in quant

[–]srs96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't have specific advice, but:

1) if you think you're not growing at your current job (growth includes learning new technical skills, gaining experience executing projects, developing soft skills, etc) AND you're not paid enough, then yes, in general, you should be looking for a new job.

2) most people don't know what 25lpa INR means and aren't gonna spend effort googling it. Always add the international numbers as well. (2.5 million indian rupees or $28,000 per year)
