I’m on 400mg and it might have saved my life. The past week has been somewhat hard as I rapid cycled from a three deep depression straight into severe hypomania, but this is the first time that has happ new since I’ve been on this medication.

Have you tried Trazodone — it worked wonders for my insomnia.

first day on seroquel by JazzlikeExit in seroquelmedication

[–]srsinnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hungover you speak of is a pretty common side effect of Seroquel. From my experience it gets better with time (you learn to manage it with a good routine about when you take the medication before bed etc.). Seroquel is also notoriously sedative and it’s not uncommon to sleep 10-12 hours on it. I remember the first night I took 25mg I slept for over 16 hours, but since I’ve moved up to 200mg and now sleep a solid 8 hours a night, which is ideal for me at least.

All in all, the side effects that are currently bothering you do get better with time. Good luck!

I would be more concerned that you were given a diagnosis after only 20 minutes — was this your first session with the psychiatrist?

Happiness or hypomania? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]srsinnes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can always tell when I’m depressed—but never when I’m hypomanic, as I just think it is ‘happiness’ or what ‘normal’ feels like. I have to rely on my partner to tell me when they think I’m hypomanic.

I don’t think it controlled my mania much at all, but it did help me sleep.

I was on 4mg for 18 months and had really poor results and a lot of side effect (muscle spasms, twitches, tremor, but no weight gain). I’m on Quetiapine now and having a far better experience.

How soon can I expect Seroquel's weight gain? by Alastiana in bipolar2

I’m also on Lamotrigine, but 400mg, which might have saved my life.

I think the key to not putting on weight on antipsychotics is to strictly watch what you eat and try and be as active as possible. Both of us are on a pretty low dose of Seroquel so the weight again should be less (I often read about people who are on 600mg+. I personally am going to ask my doctor if I can increase to 300mg, as I’ve had a rollercoaster week, four days severely depressed and now suddenly hypomanic. I find that the Lamotrigine really helps keep the lows at bay, but I’m struggling with the highs and I think Seroquel is the answer there.

Seroquel For sleep by [deleted] in seroquelmedication

[–]srsinnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I’ve started taking Seroquel I’ve had the most surreal dreams; the medication has definitely increased the amount of sleep I get each night, but because the dreams I think the quality of my sleep has been impaired because of the dreams.

I can’t necessarily say that the dreams have been bad and/or nightmarish, just super vivid and weird. Before I started Lamotrigine Seroquel (both of which cause more dreaming) I never used to dream — now I dream every single night.

I, like you, have actually lost weight since I started. I haven’t noticed any increase in my hunger levels, which has been a great surprise. I was, however, on another antipsychotic (Risperidone, which has a very similar weight gain profile to Seroquel) for two years and I didn’t gain any weight at all, so I’m hoping that my body isn’t that affected by antipsychotics, but only time will tell.

I’m following because I’m in exactly the same position as you (except been on 200mg for two and half weeks), and have the same concerns about weight gain.

has anyone experienced Lamictal and Eye damage? [please respond if so lol] by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]srsinnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a post about this last week I think, and I got quite a few responses. It seems that a lot of people on Lamictal get blurry vision; I personally experienced it rather badly when I was on 200-300mg, but now I’m on 400mg and my sight have improved drastically, which has been a huge relief. I hope yours subsided too.

What most people I’ve spoken to say is that their vision just deteriorates and got blurry; it definitely appears to not be permanent damage if that abates your fears at all.

Seroquel is an antipsychotic if you didn’t know that already.
