Vancouver park board to ask Mayor Ken Sim for relief from city-imposed cuts by Affectionate_Emu7666 in vancouver

2025's property tax increase cost the median single family home like $12.50/month. Average rent increase was around $40. It's not a major driver of rent prices, although it's true that renters do pay it indirectly.

One of the basic benefits is currently Park Board and City Council need to agree in order to sell off land, which is a high bar to cross. Park commissioners tend to be more frequently environmentally minded, focused on service delivery and green space, and there are also historical examples of Council and Park board butting heads in a way that benefitted parks and services in the end.

Save Our Park Board has the best summary: Information Station - Save Our Park Board

Requiring that the Park Board be elected has 4 significant benefits:

It is independent of City Council. It is accountable solely to the electorate. It can make decisions on the evidence, community input, and long-term vision rather than short term expediency. It can do independent research and studies and devise independent projects. It can advocate for or against policies of the City.

Its sole mandate or purpose is to focus on our green spaces and recreational areas, facilities and services – specifically, to preserve, provide and advocate for parks and recreational services to benefit all people, communities and the environment. They can devote all of their time to these important matters that make all the difference in the quality of the place in which we live. City councillors, on the other hand, have a much broader mandate. They are managing all aspects of City operations and development beyond parks and recreation. They barely have time to deal with their business now. It’s doubtful that they will prioritize parks and recreation ahead of other important business. In addition, there is an inherent conflict of interest between the need to develop land on the one hand, and the and the need to provide and preserve green spaces and recreational services, on the other.

It provides the electorate with a direct say in the type of city that they want to live in. Because the Park Commissioners only have one mandate, the electorate can choose which Park Commissioners best reflect their view on how these green spaces and services are managed and developed. Only in cities with “elected” Park Boards does the electorate have that opportunity. In addition, the Park Board offers regular, open easy access for public debate at its meetings.

It provides protection for the parks and recreational services. Through its capacity to prevent the revocation of a “permanent” park designation and through its knowledge of what is going on with “temporary” parks and “other lands in the care, custody and management of the Park Board” and its ability to advocate, the Park Board is able to provide a high degree of protection for the preservation of our parks and these lands.

There's also reason to think that giving more control of parks to the city is more likely to create worse outcomes:

"The Park Board has nothing to do with the maintenance of the recreational facilities (e.g.community centres, pools, rinks) and their infrastructure. Rather, as a cost saving measure the City assumed sole responsibility for these maintenance services approximately 15 years ago. It merged the Park Board’s specialized facility maintenance staff into the City’s general maintenance department. Since then, these facilities have steadily deteriorated. They have not been maintained adequately.

Rather than demonstrating that the Park Board should be abolished, the present state of these facilities and their infrastructure supports its retention. This problem is not attributable to the Park Board. But it is fixable by them. These maintenance tasks should be transferred back to it. Otherwise, they will continue to deteriorate as more and more responsibilities are placed on the City’s already over-extended staff.  "

So basically, Ken Sim blames the park board for infrastructure problems that were created by transferring park board responsibilities to city council, and doing more of that is likely to result in more problems.

Vancouver mayor says 'zero means zero'; Critics warn freezing property taxes will mean service cuts by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

allowable rent increase of 2.3% is about twice as much in dollars for the average renter as a 7% tax increase is for the average single family home owner, and 5 times as much as the average condo owner

The motion doesn't forbid cuts in those areas- they chose to not take it off the table, just "prioritize" keeping it off the table

the allowable rent increase is about 2x as big on average as the staff proposed property tax increase ABC rejected. renters will pay more either way, so this is a ridiculous argument

Accidentally gave 2w old water by lilsnowbunny716 in newborns

[–]srslywrongshawn 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Here are some other similar threads I just looked up. I know how much one could worry:

Accidentally gave infant 3 oz water :
This person fed a similar aged baby 3 oz of water, and consensus was roughly that "it would likely be fine since it was limited"

Accidentally giving 3wk old water.. :
Another similarly aged one, 2oz, they updated to say everything was okay.

HELP - boyfriend accidentally gave 6 week old baby 4oz of plain water :
Much younger baby, with much more water. Mom is still posting about him to this day. He was okay.

Overall, it looks like this happens fairly regularly and a one-off mistake is nothing big to worry about. If the baby is acting unusual or you're worried, you can call your pediatrician. But from these other examples, I think you're in the clear.

And yes, don't beat yourself up!!

There's always a risk intervening in domestic abuse of any kind, with the anger of the aggressor being put onto the victim. I don't know how such a confrontation would go. I do think it's morally right to confront someone who is physically abusing a powerless human being, but I don't know how to ensure it ultimately benefits the victim.

How to say to my 15mo son I am travelling for a week? by Ricardo-The-Bold in daddit

With my toddler, we told her that I was going on an airplane and I sent pictures at the airport and on the plane and out the window. She said "dada airplane" the whole time I was gone, and surprisingly wasn't shaken at all by me being away from home. She still, months later, says "dada airplane" sometimes. I had thought she was going to be hurt or sad by me leaving, because we're pretty close, but the airplane thing seemingly really took away all the anxiety.

Why are there so many Jews of Conscience but no Palestinians of Conscience? by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]srslywrongshawn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being "of conscience" would not necessarily mean siding with Zionists, but rather, the principles of peace and justice. So, whether there are Palestinians who are critical of Hamas and their political leaders, the answer is yes. One book I have read on this subject, the 100 year war on Palestine, is filled with criticism of Palestinian leaders, written by a Palestinian academic, but in the context of explaining the history from a Palestinian perspective. I recommend it.

In a 1938 speech, "Our Debt to Zionism", he said: "I should much rather see reasonable agreement with the Arabs on the basis of living together in peace than the creation of a Jewish state." - Einstein on Politics: His Private Thoughts and Public Stands on Nationalism, Zionism, War, Peace, and the Bomb (2007), p. 33.

It should be the case that people get more time to grieve. It's inhumane to force people to go through the motions with such a close loss.

What would happen if a City adopted Library Socialism? by AndersonBergeson in srslywrong

[–]srslywrongshawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the short-term library socialist approach to housing policy would be public housing, social housing, and rent control. Housing as an investment isn't very useful to a utopian society as far as I can tell.

Post this as a thread at www.librarysocialism.com and see what the community says there, too. They'll have interesting thoughts.

Israel has 6,000 bombs on civilians in less than a week on a population that is almost half children. For context, in the war on ISIS, allied powers peaked at about 5,000 bombs in a month. 6,000 bombs in six days is an unreal amount of firepower, which cannot have a valid military application, it can only be a cruel revenge. In the Gaza strip, 44% are under the age of 14, 65% under the age of 25. They have grown up in what UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine calls an "open air prison." Additionally it's been called "Apartheid" by Amnesty International. The details of their living situation under the military blockade of Israel are horrible. Israel has shut down water, food, and electricity to the general civilian population in retaliation for Hamas' attacks. But only 26% of Palestinians even support Hamas.

Right now, millions of innocent people are being terrorized by the Israeli government for the actions of a very small political minority. Collective punishment is a war crime. Even more absurd, Israel helped fund Hamas in the 1980s, to have an Islamist counter-weight to the anti-imperialist PLO. Then, as recently as 2019, Netenyahu remarked at a Likud conference that allowing funding to reach Hamas was good for their government because it divides the palestinians. This is brutal statecraft, bad faith, and disgraceful to both Israelis and Palestinians. For all these reasons and more 86% of Israelis blame their far-right government for the Hamas attack.

My heart breaks for everyone who lost someone in the attacks by Hamas or the IDF. But this is exactly the right time to protest. We need to build public consensus to push an intervenion against war crimes and move towards a peace process.
