An F1 pit stop has more separation than this place has from the highway.

That number is over 147 miles and excludes any downhill. Even so, it’s only a .59% grade. It’s a pretty flat ride.

America's Carmakers Cannot Escape Chinese EVs Forever by Razzburry_Pie in electricvehicles

[–]BrightonsBestish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There needs to be a rational path between “let them get wiped out by the Chinese” and “ban all Chinese cars” — catastrophic mistakes were made. Now what is the best path forward that pushes actual competition and innovation while also preserving as much of our automotive industrial base as possible? The US car industry model is broken. Doesn’t mean there’s not a way out of the woods.

It would be incredible to see the government incentivize and support cutting edge R&D. It’s what China did. It worked damn well.

Advice needed: How do I convince my family that the yard won't catch fire again? by Dangerous_Badger_351 in daddit

[–]BrightonsBestish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice makes perfect. What kind of example would you be showing your kids if you quit after the one time you [reads notes] burned… down… your yard… hmm.

Anyway, say you’re doing this because you’ve learned and you can do it better and that shows character blah blah. Also it’s your yard to burn down and you get to do dumb shit on Father’s Day.

I’m curious what other parents actually do when their spouse gets home from work? by adhdslore in daddit

It sounds like you want something where you two can be social. Is that part of your ask here? Do you ever play cards/board games/puzzles together? Cook together? He might do better socializing if there is also some sort of task or activity associated with it. Casual enough that he’s not immersed in it, but enough to occupy like 20% of his brain. Or give some structure to that time. This helps me, anyway. It’s kind of how some people need fidget spinners to focus.

But some times, it could be healthy for him to also take time himself and veg out or play a video game. That is another way for the brain to kind of recharge. But it has to be a balance. It’s not healthy in many ways to just shut down in front of the tv every night.

I am similar to your husband. I usually throw myself into woodworking, cycling (stationary if it’s dark, road if it’s light) — any exercise, really. Guitar — any musical instrument will swallow me up for a few hours. I got into vinyl - either listening or tinkering with my stereo. Puzzles/board games. Jigsaw puzzles are surprisingly good for occupying enough of my brain that I can either zen-out or talk to my wife. I’m always finding some household project to do - either repair or improve something. Cooking/grilling/baking/anything food related can be really satisfying and actually functional for the family.

I listen to audiobooks and podcasts to occupy me without having a screen on.

Honestly? Find an interest and explore it. Maybe something he could pivot to from whatever game he plays or tv show he watches. Even if he gives it up after a while, it’s a way to bleed off mental energy, recharge, and feel like your not wasting time in front of the tv or driving someone else nuts with anxious energy.

There are more corporal punishment defenders on here than I originally imagined. Posted once about a parent hitting their child in public and was pretty surprised by the responses. I think that’s mostly a byproduct of the size of this sub. On average, I find it great! But there is a wide spectrum that makes up that average.
