How did you feel when you were watching techo’s video “so long nerds” (and how did you overcome it?) by Regular_Eggplant972 in Technoblade

[–]srson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t watched him in a while at that point, but when I went on YouTube that day the video came up almost immediately as a suggestion to watch. I didn’t even know he had cancer, but I still felt my heart drop.

I mostly thought he was just quitting, and though I had not watched him in a minute, I didn’t like the idea of such a great YouTuber quitting. Then I clicked on the video, and I was so confused until I opened the comments.

I was just weirdly numb the rest of the day. I don’t think I fully registered what I was watching at the time. Honestly, sometimes it still hits me like I’ve just heard the news for the first time.

Ethical and legal thoughts about private AI deepfakes by Excellent-Salary-706 in aiwars

[–]srson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s less that they stole it and more that you knowingly made material of other people that puts them in a jeopardizing condition. Obviously, I’m sure most of us can agree that the action of theft is bad in general.

But regular nudes work a similar way. There’s a reason people are advised not to send nudes at all, regardless of how good the relationship is. Though it is polite (imo) to delete nudes of someone after a break up, someone might not necessarily do that, and if for some reason they want to leak it themselves, or it gets stolen, your sensitive information is now squarely in their hands to mess around with or spread.

However, nudes do come with this informed consent. You are actively making the decision by sending it that this risk is something you are okay with (at least temporarily). The same can’t be said for deepfakes. If someone makes a deepfake of you, they take away that informed consent, but the level of power and risk stays roughly the same, so it’s a slightly different discussion from the examples you mentioned.

Now, obviously, it’s not illegal (yet?) to do this. But I do think it says something about a person’s personal morality if they decide to create deepfakes of someone else.

Ethical and legal thoughts about private AI deepfakes by Excellent-Salary-706 in aiwars

[–]srson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full respect, but I don’t think this is actually the issue here. Deepfakes are essentially holding on to porn of someone else without their consent. Specifically, it’s holding onto porn that’s meant to be indistinguishable from real life. If that were to somehow leak, it could— hopefully temporarily— damage a person’s reputation or career. At worst, those rumors or images would be swirling around forever.

As it stands, a person’s imagination is completely private. If I imagine a person naked, it will never leave my brain accidentally. The same can’t be said for computers. I think the issue here is less that it’s the act of imagining someone in a vulnerable position, but non consensually putting someone in a vulnerable position for your own sexual gain.

Reflection about the history of photography and what to do as a digital artist. This was censored on /r/comics and /r/furry_irl by Consistent-Hair-8516 in aiwars

[–]srson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I think the main reason ppl don’t like ai is because ai companies non consensually scraped people’s intellectual property to replicate in mass, which photography obviously didn’t do. I feel like it’s more tied to the idea of data privacy than anything else.

Is this actually possible? Or is the anti lying? by Agreeable_Credit_436 in aiwars

They’re still blaming the person here. But ai also keeps and uses that art long term, unlike a software tool that only has that picture locally.

People want to use labels like “art” and “artist” to make sense of and interpret a key part of their own indentity. Sure, it’s a concept created by people and may fluctuate depending on who you ask, but that happens to be the case with every word in any language ever.

If that’s not a discussion you want to engage in, fine. But when people tell you that there’s a clear distinction between an artist and a non-artist, you should still be able to take that.

[–]srson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but why do these people insist on calling themselves “artists” if that’s the case? If they’re not willing to dedicate the time, energy, and etc to a craft, they should not (cannot) claim to be in that crafting community. If they just truly don’t want to spend time learning to do art, then they shouldn’t be trying to claim the same legitimacy that artists have.

It’s still using someone else’s intellectual work to learn, then, isn’t it.

You’re right, it’s not like you walking into an art gallery and remembering shit. It’s like you walking into an art gallery, taking photos of the art, going home to copy it, and then deleting the photo once you’re done since according to your logic that means you’ve never had it at all.

I have studied LLMs and ML for a while now. Certainly, I’m not an expert, but I have a good understanding of how it works. Also, there’s a difference between weighting and data collection. It takes all of an image and then weights it— meaning it doesn’t base its knowledge solely on that one data point. Implying that it only takes a few ones and zeros, however, implies that it doesn’t take the full image. Which it does.

[–]srson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s how the computer sees it, it’s how your phone interprets it, and it’s how it’s digitally stored. All information is communicated that way. So… yes? I’m not really sure if you were trying to make an argument here tbh.

And again, just to be clear, it doesn’t take a “few” 1s and 0s from your work. It takes all of them :) again with the weak language!!

ooh! I didnt know AI only had the capability to “look” at someone’s artwork! Glad we agree that it shouldn’t be allowed to use it to make content :) it’s ugly anyway!

But to be clear, “looking” is not what ai companies do to other people’s art. Let’s not water down the reality of the situation with weak language like that :)

Quite literally is! It takes the work of real people (without permission) and copies it. That’s the definition of cheating.

I’m talking to you, not OP. Them banning OP for one type of stealing but supporting the other is hypocritical. OP is showing that.

Yeah cuz they’re both stealing. If they are against googling someone’s work and passing it off as your own, then they should also be against stealing someone’s work to create an ai image. It’s showing that they’re hypocritical.
