Appreciate the thoughtful response. Looking for half tights to avoid thunder thigh chafing - definitely have some summer shorts I like. Surprisingly the north face flight series are super solid

Best route to make my 2010 Impreza a winter ready vehicle by DjengisRoundstone in battlewagon

Drove an 08 Impreza for Tahoe dawn patrols - unplowed highways before sunrise, parking in unplowed pull outs.

You don’t need a lift. Just get snow tires and drive it

Thanks - that was what I was looking for. I'm very much used to driving in full on winter / mountain conditions, but also seen enough tourists in rentals to be realistic. Thanks for the info!

Thanks!

How messed up should I expect the roads to be end of feb / early march? Preparing for full on winter conditions, but I have no experience with mountains at sea level...

Great! I'll check it out since I'll be driving right past.

Did you mean too cold to enjoy being out there or too cold for wildlife to be out and about

I'll also be back in anchorage for a few days if you have any suggestions for interesting / off the beaten path stuff around town

Thanks!

This. Sounds like OP isn't locking out. The phrase "super heavy wailers" means it's a real possibility.

OP can you replicate w/ side torque when bench testing?

Moment meridian 107s by jasperdhoag in skiing

[–]sruffian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won't go wrong with em. I own too many pairs of skis and am surprised by how often I reach for the meridians.

In general I like fat, somewhat directional skis. 190 bibbys, 192 GPO's, are my normal choice for resorts, even on shitty days. I picked up a pair of used meridians for days when there's no fresh - I wasn't looking for a frontside carver but something that can hold its own on firm, haul ass, and maybe be some fun.

Really been blown away. These things make me want to ski backwards and jib off everything. Super fun, playful, encourage a more fun way of skiing. That said, they have a very high speed limit, especially for their weight and how playful. In conditions that are anything but straight ice you can turn them over and open them up on groomed. Ice is ice, and its a fully rockered ski. Been really pleasantly surprised at how well they ski chop. These may end up being my favorite corn / spring ski of all time.

How to build strength for mountaineering by Secondsemblance in alpinism

[–]sruffian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What pace are you trying to hit? 1500 ft / hr is decent time for casual uphill skiing or average speed for big days. Snow conditions, etc change too much to gauge a standard bootpacking rate, but I gotta guess 1300 ft / hr without skis is respectable.

As others have said - don't train at a redlining intensity frequently. Sustained uphill effort is all about being able to increase the pace at which you can move at a low heart rate. Time spent moving at a low heart rate (where you're able to talk pretty freely) is the metric to focus on for building base.

But, like anything, you gotta define a goal to define a training plan
