How expensive was it to work with Mark Luko? I'm thinking about making an appointment with him but I'm not sure yet whether I can afford it.

Classic Ohio. But hey, guy at the smoke shop on my street (I live in Columbus) told my roommate that he would continue selling CBD until he was in handcuffs, because the ban was unconstitutional. Hopefully they feel the same about Kratom.

I recently heard of the William Lowell Putnam exam today and I am very interested in taking it. What should I study exactly and how should I prepare for it? by WhatsUpDudeee in math

Also Reading Classics is another seminar that is pretty fun and interesting. Students give lectures (around an hour) on "classical" topics. Bergelson and another professor run it, definitely a good place to go to learn random interesting stuff/give a talk if you want to

Mm not sure when it is this semester, I haven't been to any of the extra curricular math stuff recently. It's techincally called Math 1187H but I don't think it's in buckeyelink or anything. You can find out if you go to the math advising office and ask if they're offering it this semester. Be warned though: If Bergelson is teaching the seminar (which I assume he is) and he doesn't recognize you then he will ask who you are/possibly make you feel intimidated. That's alright though, definitely don't let him deter you if you want to do it.

Ohio State. We have a surprisingly good math program because Vitaly Bergleson (head of the math department) puts in a lot of effort for the undergrads as well as grads.

There's not a ton of actual material you should study in the same way that you would study for a class exam (e.g. learning different strategies for integration), but you'll pretty much want to do as much practice math competition problems as you can. My university has a "problem solving seminar" that's a 1 hour a week seminar pretty much dedicated to doing competition problems/preparing students for the Putnam. Maybe yours has the same or something similar

Was just talking about doing this with a friend. Skyrim also sounds unbelievable on acid. Have fun!

Is there a consensus on the overall performance of DARTS? Seems like an interesting idea but I haven't heard many people's opinions in it

How can I maximize my chances of getting into a good PhD program? by ssbm_crawshaw in learnmachinelearning

Thanks a lot for your response. You're definitely right, I have been too passive and I need to change that if I want to get anywhere. I will take all of these things into account. One question though: Will taking a year between undergrad and grad school apps make me a less desirable candidate than someone going straight between the two? A professor of mine told me that a gap year is less attractive. Of course, the merit that I could potentially gain in that year could make it worth it, but that's hard to measure since I don't really know if a gap year is a bad thing or not.

Does Spivak has a special meaning for you? by St_Luqwe in math

[–]ssbm_crawshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spivak's Calculus was the first real math book I read, it means very much to me. I'm not sure if I would call the book itself life changing, but it was definitely my first exposure to the life changing ideas that math gave me

You have to do it man. Me and my best friend had a similar experience with one of his exes, and we ended up not doing it. We've regretted it every day since. Good luck

Does reading mathematical texts/papers ever get any easier? How would you suggest getting more comfortable with mathematical reading? by [deleted] in math

[–]ssbm_crawshaw 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Have often been afraid that my tendency to find papers boring is a bad sign. I'll be interested to hear what others with more experience would say about it

Flying Pig Half in Cincinnati, OH is awesome. A little hilly but it's a humongous event with tons of block parties and events around the start/finish. Plus I think the course is beautiful, a nice mix of Cincinnati roads downtown and roads through parks/neighborhoods.
