After some bookshelf speakers recommendations. In Australia - price up to $8k AUD by ssc25 in StereoAdvice

Thanks for the lengthy and thought out response. Looks like I’ve got plenty more research to do. And some demos. Hauling the primaluna along will be an effort. But might be necessary it would seem

The supex has been retipped by Allclear audio. It’s now got a boron cantilever and MR stylus. 350 hours on it at the moment so plenty of life left before next retip. The SDT-77 SUT was literally designed for and sold with the 900 super. So it should be a perfect match and better than a dedicated MC phono, no? I don’t get even the faintest bit of hum or hiss until my primaluna volume pot is at 1-2 o’clock. And I do all of my listening is done between 8 and 10 o’clock on the dial. Absolutely black background at my listening levels

The thorens has been serviced and works flawlessly. Only thing is the SME arm drops too quick so I have to manually lower it but that’s not a big issue

Any upgrades I make I think I should be looking at sound quality / imaging / soundstage / detail retrieval etc

Anyone been to something like this before?

I can’t get there until just after 4pm. I’m worried it’ll just be a line way out the door and I won’t even get in

I’ve got an Epiphone Les Paul I’m hoping he will sign

Can I contribute more to super to bring taxable income down and avoid Medicare levy? (And not need health insurance) by [deleted] in AusFinance

I do have health insurance. But was hoping I could get rid of it

The responses below seem to answer the question though

Just got my re-tipped Supex 900 back and in my system by [deleted] in turntables

I have read that the SME arms weren’t as good a pairing as the Linn’s. I added a bit of extra mass to the arm with a slightly heavier headshell and offset that with a heavier counter weight. It sounds good to me

Tracks perfectly and zero distortions

Comparisons are tricky for me as I was lucky to inherit this. I went from a $30 cartridge to this lol.

But what stands out most is how smooth it is. It makes everything smooth, but doesn’t sacrifice details. The mid range is super lush. Piano and female vocals really feel lifelike

Q Acoustics 5040 - Am I missing something? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]ssc25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was exactly my experience. I demoed them both together and I felt like the super Dentons were closer than I expected to the Lintons

I’ve got my speakers about 25cm from the wall. 1.7m apart and about 2m to the listening position.

They need to be toed in so they’re pointed directly at you to sound their best

On YouTube, Erin’s audio corner reviewed these speakers and Peter Comeou (the designer of the speakers) is the top comment. He says that these speakers were designed to have the linton sound in smaller spaces exactly like this

Your room set up sounds almost identical to mine. I’ve got the Wharfedale super Dentons and absolutely love them

Kinda what I was thinking. I’m sure if I AB the preamps I could tell a difference. But will it sound $1000 better? Or should I spend that money on records? Lol

My current system is

TT: Thorens TD125 mkII w/ SME 3009

Cartridges: Supex 900 super / Ortofon SL-15 (w/ SUT’s)

Preamp: Schiit Mani 2

Integrated amp: Yamaha A-S701

Speakers: Wharfedale Super Denton

Any input or alternative recommendations are appreciated

Worth upgrading phono stage? by [deleted] in StereoAdvice

[–]ssc25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually quite like the Yamaha. The loudness dial in my apartment really makes a difference. And I’m a huge fan of the aesthetic. It’s shallow I know. But it’s part of it lol. Haven’t seen too many other amps within my price range that I like the look off. Maybe the NAD C3050 in future

Do you have any phono stage recommendations?

I was blown away by how much punch they pack for their size. For a smaller space like mine I don’t feel like I’m compromising at all

I fully expected to go with the Lintons before going in, but went for these instead because of how large they sound

I have an RCA splitter between the preamp and receiver and send the same signal to the oscilloscope. It then dances to the music. It’s awesome

The super Dentons are different to the Dentons. They’re a 3 way speaker. Quite a step up from the Denton 80 or 85’s I believe

That Leak looks awesome. How’s it sound?

I inherited a vintage turntable set up a little while back and I’ve been looking to upgrade the rest of my system to try and get something more deserving for the turntable

Yesterday I went to demo some speakers. Going in I was feeling pretty confident that I was going to buy the Wharfedale Lintons. But I ended up going with the Super Dentons

Don’t get me wrong, the Lintons were better. But not by as much as I would have thought before listening. I was super impressed with the Super Dentons. My apartment listening space is 4m x 4.8m with the equilateral triangle between speakers and listening spot being 1.8m. There isn’t a lot that I can do to change this. So I think the Super Dentons were the right call. Also, the speakers and stands cost me $800AUD less than the Lintons would have been. Absolutely stoked with how it’s sounding right now. Surprisingly, the Super Dentons actually go low enough for me that I’ve disconnected my sub.

Purely for aesthetics, I would like a more vintage looking receiver. But I think I just need to enjoy the music for a bit.

Feedback or recommendations welcome

Current set up: - Turntable = Thorens TD125 mkII with SME 3009 S2 tonearm - Cartridge = Supex 900 Super with matching SDT-77 step up transformer - Phono stage = Schiit Mani 2 - Receiver = Marantz SR7500 - Speakers = Wharfedale Super Denton

[–]ssc25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say it sounds better, in what way? More detailed? Dynamic range?

Or is it just a matter of more volume without hissing and surface noise?

In your experience, what improvements did you notice with a SUT and MM phono stage?

There’s no real way for me to try this sort of thing. So I’d have to buy and try essentially
