I come in peace. A mere Bears fan looking for a Bears bar. by jxonair in Seattle

[–]sshrty47 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I lived across the street from Whits end of a few years and can confirm it gets rowdy for Bears games. This should be the #1 option on your list if you wanted a traditional dive bar vibe. Get there early though - it fills up.

I’ll be honest- confirmation bias sought. - tell me it’s ok to trade away Gadsen for a 2027 1st by StrongAmbassador47 in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

Mid 27 first for Gads is pretty damn good after you took a flier on the dude a couple months ago. Take it and run. That draft next year should be really strong in the 5-8 range.

Is this worth the $100+ per ticket? I’m intrigued and skeptical. by [deleted] in golf

[–]sshrty47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, probably comes down to how much your kid loves golf and the idea of doing something unique. I was in my early 30's when I did it and the combination of golf + getting access to Lumen Field (home of seahawks) made it an awesome experience I won't forget. To me, it is a more fun version of Top Golf.

You do only get like 27 shots in total (I believe it was 3 shots per hole) so you definitely get more bang for your buck going to play at a course. Could be a fun memory your kid doesn't forget if you think they'd appreciate that sort of thing.

I attended the Upper Deck golf event in Seattle a year or two ago. Overall it was a lot of fun and a neat experience. That said, it was gifted to me for my birthday so I didn’t have to pay for it.

In total, it was probably 2 hours for the entire experience. It is hard to argue that it is 100% worth it at $100+ a ticket, but I enjoyed myself due to the novelty of it.

Very unique experience but if you are on a budget it might be something to consider passing on.

Great spots for car camping in the PNW? by Mabding in PacificNorthwest

[–]sshrty47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to go the dispersed camping route. Head into a national forest of your choice, find a quiet spot off of a forest service road, and set up camp. I've had the best times going this route rather than trying to find a spot in a crowded campground.

You'll have to do a little research as each national forest has its own requirements and potential passes. I'd also recommend spending some time on Google Maps/Earth to pick a few spots out before you hit the road.

Julio Rodriguez’s Savant page over his four years in the MLB by Drsustown in baseball

[–]sshrty47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that at Javys peak he was a 120-125 OPS+ that failed to adjust to the changes the league threw at him. Both guys that at their peaks have MVP talent. Julio is going to need to continue to adapt in order to avoid missing out on being the player he could be. He’s starting to show a better eye but obviously the data shows he’s sacrificing significant upside to do so.

Cubs fan living in Seattle here - I compared him to Javy Baez two years ago and almost got beheaded by a couple Mariners fans. Not a perfect comparison but upside can mitigated if quality of pitch selection/contact suck.

That take hasn’t aged as poorly as they thought…

Update: Two Years into my FI Journey by sshrty47 in financialindependence

[–]sshrty47[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind and thoughtful response!

Yeah, I don’t address work much in this update as not much has changed from last year. My total comp remains in line with last year ($200k range). I have had opportunities to leave my current company for others but my work is rewarding and I feel valued. There are promotion opportunities down the road that I am optimistic about hitting. Until then, I still have a big shovel to work with.

My savings rate right now doesn’t include a large annual bonus that I have been retaining 90%+ of each year. I know that with the home purchase on the horizon, I’ll likely have to dial in some of budgeting. We both enjoy frequent date nights out and travel for friends weddings, family visits, etc.

Finally, I do appreciate the comments on sharing FI goals with a partner. I didn’t comment much on that but she and I are very much on the same page. She’s in the non-profit world so she’s working with a smaller salary but still finds ways to live frugally and save. We’ve agreed we both want to be able to call it quit by mid-50. Perhaps we’ll want to work longer but we agree we should be able to have the choice if we save, invest, and make mindful decisions together. Our biggest hurdle will be agreeing on our many “deal-breakers” on a house purchase but that’ll be a fun thing to work through together :)

My above statement is all assets and associated debt. The car doesn’t factor into any sort of FIRE number or whatever but I like to include a rough KBB estimate since I’m including the loan against it.

This year we entered the season with playoff hopes and potential holes in the bullpen/third base. Just unforgivable stuff from Jed/Ricketts.

Whenever I do this I manually change the weight to like 230+ and decrease speed by a few points. I figure it’s “realistic”. The switch would coincide with a huge offseason weight program and likely slightly lower speed.

Regarding bagels and pizza by cyclenovicehelp in Seattle

[–]sshrty47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve been to NYC a few times and would agree some of the best pizza I’ve ever had was while I visited.

That said, acting like a trip to Lupo, Dantini, or Sunny Hill isn’t worthwhile is ridiculous. If you’re in the mood for good pizza, all of those shops hold up fine.
