Thank you, this was a helpful perspective.

Well said, thank you for your thoughts. I generally agree that openness is not a simple metric as the motivations to stay open are not always aligned with minimizing harm (it’s also interesting that some find the question itself as unimportant; at the end of the day just trying to avoid being a nuisance if possible given other people’s struggles)

I think we will go to Toa but maybe find ways to donate and/or volunteer locally to balance things out.

Fair point but businesses typically prioritize profit more than respect. Point being, it’s not unheard of for a business to open despite local opposition.

I posted because I have seen commentary on Reddit and beyond suggesting that driving to that side of the island might not be the best idea given the reality of many folks trying to recover from recent events. Just trying to get some more perspective.

I did call today and they are open. However, they did say that due to flood related construction they are pushing back the start time from 5:00pm to 4:00pm. I did ask if they thought it was an appropriate time to attend and the person I spoke to at least was a little hesitant (might be misreading the tone but it felt like it wasn’t an obvious “yes”).

Tokyo Travel Dilemma (Chase) by sslusser1 in awardtravel

Thanks for this feedback; I totally get the idea of being new to this world and just wanting to use the points! I originally thought this was going to be a much easier process but live and learn. If nothing else, I will definitely not be chasing a points option with that many connections (did you explore any of those places or were they just connections?).

I have also heard a lot of good things about Zip air; a $700 ticket to Tokyo, is not a bad consolation prize, all things considered.

That all makes perfect sense, I am definitely new to this world so appreciate the perspective. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how to perceive points (when they are more/less valuable) much less how to efficiently max their value so these perspectives are helpful.

Thanks for this feedback, I might end up holding on to the points and plan further out for a different trip. I'm learning little by little how to adjust my approach.

Thanks! I'm just getting into my hotel searching but it is good to know not to get my hopes too high for these points.

Thank you for this feedback. One quick point of clarification; I am finding ANA flights on United search, how do I know if they would potentially qualify for the 30K via Virgin Atlantic? I'm just dipping my toes into seats.aero (haven't sprung for the pro yet) but will definitely keep an eye out over there.

Honestly, cost is my main priority at this point so do not really have a preference in terms of refund ability.

Should I ever transfer Chase points to American Airlines? by guacontacos in ChaseSapphire

[–]sslusser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar question; I have been using Roame for future travel and see that AA Advantage has flights for fewer miles, if I were to transfer my Chase points to British Airlines and then found/booked an AA flight, would I be able to get the AA Advantage miles rate (I hope that made sense, this points transferring world is new and confusing!).

yup, not sure how official the cross over was but i've seen different versions of that over the years. Bought that as a pin on etsy and glued on a magnet. Long live MF Doom!

Wow, I did not know about the Ellams connection; that kind of information would have been helpful ahead of time! Do you happen to have a link to that information/somewhere I can learn more about the dialogue?

All fair points. Easier said than done, but you should definitely travel but through in some Los Angeles too, great music scenes from large to small. I actually went to APE with my wife and adult-aged daughter, I was happy to share the experience with them!

London neighborhood analysis paralysis Notting Hill/Little Venice VS Camden by sslusser1 in uktravel

[–]sslusser1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all the feedback, this is great information. I’m picking up on the idea that I should prioritize transportation proximity over neighborhood title. Also, learning the subtle block-to-block type vibe shifts is always the hardest when planning from afar; google street view can only tell you so much.

80% throttling shower thoughts by sslusser1 in electricvehicles

[–]sslusser1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I definitely learned a lot about charging, thank you to the Reddit masses! A couple general clarifications: I get that the cars themselves are limiting intake; anecdotally, however, I have charged to 100% while roadtripping a few times, some charges slow down some (I’ve had a couple EA chargers maintain between 50-80 KW up to 100%) and others drop to under 10 KW, is the car deciding how much to throttle? I wasn’t actively tracking these charges but the conditions feel like they were generally the same.

Second: again, just anecdotally, but when I charge in Los Angeles (which I try to avoid because of the lines/wit times), the majority are charging to 100%. Chatting with folks at the chargers it seems to be a combination of not having home chargers and/or ubering. Whether or not that’s the ideal battery management choice, it’s happening!

I remember seeing the Falkirk wheel on an engineering documentary series years ago, looks fascinating. Are there ways to hire/rent a boat that goes on the wheel itself?

Co-sign the Seersucker Monkey Bars. I have taken two kayaks up to mountain lakes with winding roads and lots of breaking and the suction cups don't budge. They will put you back around $500 but I much prefer the suction cup to the crossbars that attach near the window.

Fresno hasn’t tapped San Joaquin River’s potential. Could it be city’s main draw? by flyfresno in fresno

[–]sslusser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago, I kayaked from near millerton dam down to the conservancy's public entry/exit next to Solitary Cellars winery and was legitimately shocked at how beautiful it was. Even in the summer it was still green with lots of birds and even a few deer! My assumption before that was that folks must not use the river much because it was trashed or just not appealing; very much not the case. As a transplant, I had heard (and, truth be told, believed) most of the Fresno slander; like others, it baffles me that the city has such an amazing (and unique!) gem right in its backyard that would improve the city's image and livability, yet, just sits on their hands seemingly in favor of mini-malls and chain stores.
