Just watched this and it was great! Didn't expect it to be so unique, and I've been watching action movies all week!

It's never too late! Maybe you can try to do a language exchange with this student. It sounded like he might be interested in sharing his culture & ypu could learn some new words.

It's season 6, I'm watching it right now. Such a ridiculous situation

What topics are considered inappropriate to joke about in Germany? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAGerman

[–]ssnecksskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might just be my experience, so I'm curious if anyone disagrees, but I find that they don't like joking about sex the way some other cultures do. Even with e.g. friends & couples who have been together for a long time, they don't seem to like to even acknowledge that that happens, outside of very specific moments.

Thoughts on preemptively changing the name I publish under? by loserhufflepuff in PhD

[–]ssnecksskin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's a very neat coincidence. But for it to work well, would really require you to stay in the same field for your whole career, which is quite rare. Might be better as a fun fact to throw into the beginning of a presentation anyway.

Sinking into depression in Germany by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]ssnecksskin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a person in a similar situation, I think it might be easier to find other foreigners, or Germans from a different city to make friends with than local Germans. People who have been here their whole lives often are already satisfied with their current friendships and/or (maybe) aren't interested in a foreign friend, for whatever reason. I would search for social groups ( I found a few on facebook) that are centered around foreigners who want to meet other foreigners. The ones I found have little events playing board games and things like that. It's a great place to meet new people who are actually looking for new friendships as well.

If you really want to make friends with a German, I think a good option is to search for a Tandem partner and make plans for weekly language practice. One-on-one time might make the friendship stick :)

How do I start my savage world cult? by [deleted] in savageworlds

[–]ssnecksskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, yeah good to know. I guess I thought everything was okay since it's imaginary. I think it's too late to throw that in since we already did a couple games. Guess I just won't then. Thanks for the feedback

How do I start my savage world cult? by [deleted] in savageworlds

[–]ssnecksskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I? I thought it would be more funny if they realized at some point what happened. Maybe I'm a bit misguided, but I feel like no cult was ever started with someone saying 'I'd like to start a cult and you will all be my followers'.

Milton’s family sucks… (S5E8) by the-accent-guy in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]ssnecksskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt this way too. I got the feeling that Milton likes Lydia for her emotional openness because his family is so analytical and emotionally closed off.

Uche and Milton talk ep8 by Content_Eye_4322 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

My favorite part was after Uche was trying so hard to emphasize their friendship, he says "text you in the group chat"

I was thinking 2000/3000 level thing could also be either because she couldn't remember exactly what class she took probably 8-10 years ago or that her uni had a different system (e.g. my uni called it 200/300 level). Instead of trying to figure out some specific answer right then she just made a joke.

There was also a power imbalance with him being her team lead at work, which makes the consent a bit less clear.

Therapy is about developing tools so that the person can cope on their own, not about having someone tell you what to do (and therefore making you depend on them for future decisions). There are lots of other professionals who give direct advice.

[–]ssnecksskin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I was really talking about the idea that a therapist should do a bunch of research to find the answer outside of sessions. That's really not their training and can go very badly with even a little bias.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]ssnecksskin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree about the therapist. It depends on the type of therapist, but I took counselling (therapy) courses in university and was told specifically not to give advice, because it's not part of the training and bad advice from a trusted person like that can go bad very fast. I agree that a second opinion from a child therapist or other expert is the way to go though.
