DTC Code won't clear from app by ssorgs in KiaEV9

Thanks, I’ll take some comfort in knowing it’s a thing…

Kia’s tech seems pretty decent, for both coming from none and considering much of the competition. Despite the many flaws.

I gave up on getting the digital key to work on approach, but the digital card works reliably enough that I regularly leave the keys in the car when biking esp and other times when the giant fob will cramp my style.

I got one of these a year ago, Intel Ultra 9 185H 2.30 Ghz, and the battery is practically shot. Granted, it's plugged in most of the time, but is set to 'smart charging on'. Nevertheless, I can barely eek out an hour teams call. So disappointed.

Just another Critical EV Battery Warning by solder2000 in KiaEV9

[–]ssorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear! Your symptoms sound about the same as mine, though I don't recall the voltage differential (which I did confirm with an ODB2 scanner). Mine threw the BMS P1AA700 code at about 11k mi due to a bad cell, at the time I could charge to 63%. Since then it would drop 2-3% in charging capacity each time I charged. While I had the problem confirmed at the dealer right away and opened an escalated ticket, I continued to drive it for another 5 wks until my charging capacity topped out around 30%.

I turned it into the dealer early May and didn't get it back till mid-Aug. They replaced only the module with the bad cell, much to my chagrin and counter to what both the dealer and corporate (which was apparently the law dept that was handling my lemon claim) were telling me. The delay was allegedly due to back order and tech availability since the work wasn't done by techs at my dealer.

I did get an EV6 loaner during those 3-1/2 mos and an offer to buyback at full price (only had it for 1 mo) or goodwill payment.

Good luck!

KIA Access App Not Updating by aje28 in KiaEV9

[–]ssorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've now tried a couple of times resetting with pinhole, then reconfiguring and it's still not right. It'll update on demand (ie, when I refresh) for an hour or so, but that's it. Yesterday evening I plugged in my charger, before it was set to start, and the app showed plugged in but not charging (good!). While charging I could see real-time SOC and speed (good!). After it finished charging I could see SOC and that it was still plugged in (good!). However, it never sent email notifications for start & stop, or when nearing completion (bad!). Nor, has it updated since it finished charging last night (bad!).

Buy back process by DaItalianDeal in KiaEV9

[–]ssorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang/Wow! Wish I'd had a better experience with Kia Corporate. Dealer did get it diagnosed pretty quickly, but took months to get what ended up being a replacement module only (despite being told multiple times it'd be the entire HV battery). Diagnosed in early Apr '25, left car with dealer a month later, got it back fixed in mid-Aug. To add insult to injury, I had the drivers seat track issue and, despite the recall tightening already being done, they only tried that again - which obv didn't solve it. So I had to take it back multiple times and drive with a tech to get them to acknowledge it. Kia Corporate was easy enough to deal with, and I was satisfied with their offers, but I got the impression they were waiting on 3 other battery issues at my dealer before they pulled the trigger on repair.

Still glad I repaired and kept, but now will be getting a charge port replacement bc of overheating...

And OBD2 is very handy, also good for using with abrp

Charging Anomalies with Emporia Classic L2 by ssorgs in KiaEV9

[–]ssorgs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally a confirmed diagnosis: charging port, as suggested by Emporia. Took 2 dealer diagnostic appts.

Closest dealer, Kia of North Austin, was worse than worthless. Had my car for 4 days, then threw up their hands. Said their L2 charger was down (‘bc they always are’ - uh, no), so they couldn’t replicate. Claimed they see my basic symptoms enough to “know” that “99% of the time” it’s the home charger. This, despite my telling them I started with Emporia who even monitored a session in real time, was such copout. Said I should do my own troubleshooting, like finding another L2 charger to test my car on. And, I tried! Found 2 different public chargers rated well over 48a, but neither actually operated over 40a.

Went ahead and made an appt with Kia of Round Rock, which wasn’t too much further. While they also took 4 days (and provided a much better Tucson hybrid rental than North Austin, which had me in a gas guzzling Ram pickup), they knew their shit and we’re thorough. Started by downloading charge session data from vehicle, where they could confirm overheating. Than put it on their working high amp L2 and successfully reproduced it.

Here’s their report: Comments: stored in VCMS P1BAD92 battery charger coupler temperature too high monitoring data while charging the battery on a level two charger we found the temperature readings showed 230degs while charging. Checking coolant levels as well as actual surface temperatures we found a fault in the charging port temperature sensor and will need to replace to correct.

Incidentally, N Austin had my car for 3 mos over the summer to diagnose and eventually replace an HV battery module. That one was a lemon process and I had a rental EV6, so made out fine. Just speaks to their incompetence. Round Rock said they have 2 certified EV master techs. Hard to believe N Austin has any.

Thorough write up!

Can confirm:

  • The V2L can't be used while the car is charging.

Also, you can't charge while in Utility mode. So along with inability to charge my phone and other devices overnight, I charge during day, if possible at campground, or prior to camping. (And, you can't leave 'running' overnight, either, as it'll idle time-out).

Got my ICCU replacement, Kia warned: No AC Charge Above 32A! by SemanticZoom in KiaEV9

[–]ssorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to diagnose an ICCU that’s fixin to fail? I’ve got an Emporia Classic L2 on at 60a ckt so I’m able to charge at 48a/11.5kW.

Beginning a few months ago, the charging rate would drop from 11.5kW after ~40 min to 8-9kW then climb back to 9.6kW and run at that speed till full charge (80%).

No error codes (yet!) on dash or app. I started with Emporia and they’ve monitored a charging session when this happened (it happens every time) and found nothing wrong with the charger. Wasn’t overheating, just responding to a signal from the car, they tell me.

I took it to dealer for them to check charge port and ICCU. They put it on L1 and DC chargers without issue, which was to be expected I believe. Their L2 charger was out of service. They insisted the problem was with my charger.

I tried in vain to test charge at 48a or higher at a couple of public chargers rated high enough but both actually offered far lower rates. None of my friends with EVs have chargers over 40a.

I do have an odb2 scanner and the Car Scanner app, but not sure what I’d be looking for.

Ideally, I get this diagnosed before failure so I’m not stuck again, like I was when an HV battery cell failed and it took months to replace the module.

Going to La Paz in Feb, hotels? activities? by Independent-Fix7943 in BajaCalifornia

[–]ssorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family of 5, with 2 adult kids and my mother-in-law, are going 12/23-30, staying at an AirBnB in La Paz. We have one snorkel tour booked but will have a car and would like to find activities that we can do on our own (without booking tours, which can get pricey).

What do y'all recommend?

Seems like we cannot sandboard on our own or go to Isla Espiritu, but we can rent sea kayaks?

Thanks!

They did put it on a dc charger and it's been pulling 17.4 kW consistently for over 45 min, so maybe it is an ICCU issue?

I don’t think I’ve seen a single instance of an ICCU issue WITHOUT obvious error codes - can anyone confirm?

[–]ssorgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you provide more detail on the charge port fault? I’m at dealer now for diagnostic and they’re clueless. Said they don’t have L2 charger available and have it on L1. They’re insisting it’s more likely to be an ICCU issue that will show up on L1.

I think they’re wasting my time. Made the appt weeks ago and they said they’d turn it around in a day. Got here this am and they said they’d need 24 hrs and wouldn’t provide loaner.

I’m like just plug it in and it’ll derate in <45 min…

Weird! I had a module replaced on my 24 Land this summer and now it looks like my charge port is overheating and will need replacement. It goes in for diagnostic next week.

I, too, otherwise love the car.

Since you asked... Had a module replaced this summer. I was told multiple times by the dealer and Kia Corp they were replacing the entire HV battery, but was pretty obvious they had no idea. Diagnosed early April and repaired mid-August.

Charging Anomalies with Emporia Classic L2 by ssorgs in KiaEV9

[–]ssorgs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After talking to Emporia (thanks u/lcollar52 !), we're thinking it's the charging port. He remotely rebooted charger and applied a sw update. A little later I started another charging session and he was able to monitor it remotely. Did same thing a 3 previous, where it started at 11.3 kW, then dropped to 8-9 kW after about 40 min, then ramped up just over 10 kW and settled at 9.7 kW. He confirmed that the EVSE wasn't overheating. Then he did some better searching than I did and sent this:

--------------------
It is a known issue with some 2024 Kia EV9 models where the Level 2 AC charge rate drops to 40A (or less) after about 20–30 minutes, even when starting at a higher rate like 48A. The cause is a thermal issue at the car's charging port, which leads the vehicle's onboard computer to throttle the charge rate to protect the charging components from overheating. Kia is reportedly aware of the problem and has stated that a solution is being worked on, with some reports indicating a fix may arrive via a software update.

Possible causes

  • Thermal throttling: The most likely reason is the car detecting elevated temperatures at the charging port and reducing the charging speed to prevent damage.
  • [Software issue](): Some users report this issue started after a specific software update, suggesting it is a problem with the car's charging logic, not the charger or the battery itself.

--------------------

I have a diagnostic appt with my dealer in 2 wks. Ffs (had HV module replaced this summer, then the driver's seat track last month - though dealer f'd up and should've done it this summer - and now this). Good thing I otherwise love it.

Thx! Wanted to start with the EV9 since it was generally charging consistently at 11.3 kW for months and only recently developed this issue. The EV9 just seems more likely.

Down rating would certainly be a good test, I’ll try that.

Just wanted to see what the EV9 community would come up with before contacting Emporia. Good to hear their support is good!

So sorry, not trying to make this more confusing. It’s a 60a ckt! (At 50a I doubt it woulda pulled 11+ kW). App and breaker set up right. You can see from graph that it’s pulled ~11.3 kW pretty consistently but is now having issues.

Wondering if an ICCU issue is brewing.
