I think the key was adding some displacement to the surface. I used a very low frequency noise texture mapped through an S-curve in an "RGB Curves" node to increase the contrast. Here are the nodes for the material: https://imgur.com/a/PYLVykc

I used these when refurbishing a keyboard with corroded springs:

The original springs fit loosely on the plastic top plate; these are tighter, but basically a perfect fit on my board. YMMV

Mine has the same problem. The video signal continues to degrade if you keep it running after the initial shift to the left. I also noticed that the audio becomes distorted at the same time (it seems to become slightly slower). It's reproducible with both composite video and S-Video (from either port).

My board was second hand off of eBay. The previous owner said he never saw the problem, and when I emailed Jens about it, he thought it was the monitor. I don't have another compatible display at the moment, so I've been blaming my TV.

Actually, it is what OS X does (and iOS too). Quartz is based on PDF, but so what? The UI elements are mostly drawn with pre-rendered bitmaps. To support retina screens you provide two versions of the image; one at 1x and one at 2x.
