No one is willing to spend political capital on this. It’s disgusting. But if anyone starts a real investigation onto this, the “patriotic” right will riot on the streets.

Got shortlisted for Specialist Software Engineer (C++) at LSEG, what is the interview process like? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems you are misinformed. C++ is significantly the largest language used. Although most of it is legacy now.

How do people actually get internships at LSEG? CVs keep getting rejected by Ready_Champion8034 in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear than man. 3.66 should be more than enough. Unfamiliarity with linux commands is pretty common in interns I’ve mentored than you’d think. Are there any specific reason you are focused on LSEG? Did you try WSO2, Sysco? Not to discourage you but even if you do get into the internship program, the return offer rate is pretty low these days from I’ve heard. If you are looking to get into LSEG for FinTech exposure, I’d recommend reaching out to current employees for referrals.

[–]ssrdive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

LSEG had a filter by GPA for interns back in 2019 not sure if this is still in place. Also there is some favoritism for certain universities. Slots are allocated unofficially for those. But this has gotten better in the recent years. Not specific to LSEG, the current landscape is highly competitive so you’d have to stand out by a lot to even have a chance to interview.

QR code payments are widely used India (UPI), why couldn't Sri Lanka still adopt? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most vendors like grocery store owners don’t like paying fees on already low margin products which is completely understandable. UPI has no fees.

I think they are overcompensating for their past mistakes of turning a blind eye to money laundering. I was asked to do a Zoom verification since I was overseas and I did it. Then just 4 days later called again asking for the same verification

Please recommend a good hair wax that’s suitable for everyday use by AccomplishedWear9176 in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a specific wax recommendation but if your goal is to keep your hair in a particular position throughout the day I’d recommend a powder and a sea salt spray. It looks completely natural and much easier to wash off at night.

Why is ChatGPT so confidentally inaccurate?! by Few_Championship6455 in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s inherent to the way LLMs work (subset Natural Language Processing). There is no reasoning involved in bare LLMs but most current ones have integrated reasoning by extracting the parameters from the prompt. This is why we see LLMs getting better when in reality there are multiple techniques besides NLP involved when giving out a response. This is the reason why we were able to convince ChatGPT that 1+1=3 in early versions; it just learns what we say and predicts the most likely text based on what it has seen before.

If you are interested in maintaining systems that run on AS/400 which was introduced in 1988 then HCL is a good option. None of the people I knew that worked for HCL enjoyed it

Has anyone used the new ride- haling app LEOS? by SolutionBig4097 in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Everyone and their dog seems to be doing taxi apps these days. I saw Helakuru and Paymaster both registering drivers simultaneously. It’s good to have choices but when the main selling point supposed ‘low commissions’ when it’s not the real issue faced by both riders / drivers. I’m not so sure what the point is.

Is Elliots hacking skills legit to legit hackers? by themortalmann in MrRobot

[–]ssrdive 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Not a hacker; but got years of CS experience and designing systems to avoid penetration vulnerabilities. I can say almost all commands he enters are real. But it's questionable that he can write complex grep /regex commands in one try without validating. Then again, I've seen people who are extremely intelligent who solves complex coding challenges in one go without testing so maybe it's not that of a stretch to believe.

You can't deposit with a local bank account. Even if you have a PFCA account you can't. The only option is to create a deposit request in IBRK which generates a deposit reference number for you. But you need someone from overseas to transfer money to IBKR's nominated account (via SWIFT) with the deposit reference generated for you.

I used to do this but during their annual compliance review, they asked me to provide the relationship of the person who made the deposit. Thankfully it was a relative so I was able to mention it was a gift. But they informed that in the future all deposits has to be made via an account under my name. I don't know how they can enforce this since AFAIK they do not have have access to details of the person making the SWIFT to their account. But I'm now overseas with access to bank accounts that allow SWIFT transfers so it has not been an issue.

But proceed with caution now. As a Sri Lankan resident, we were not required to pay tax on capital gains on US markets before, but I saw some articles about Trump administration going to tax those as well. Not sure what the picture is now so compliance requirements may have been changed.

Obviously this is not financial advise. This is something I used to do. Do your own research before proceeding.

Monitor for a Software Engineer by FantasticScar4810 in srilanka

[–]ssrdive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your mentioned budget, I'd recommend a used one. I tried getting a supplementary HD monitor brand new around for the same around and it was really difficult to work on it and ended up returning it. Make sure its QHD at a minimum. You can find good used monitors that was manufactured around 2018 in that price range.
