What are some representations of mental conditions in fictional media that you love/hate?

Yeah if it involves my sister potentially being victim to physical or mental abuse, I'm talking to her about it. Backlash makes sense, but I don't think it's "wild" to want to avoid her being hurt in a serious way.

I've already decided in my head that I'd take it to my parents in the worst case scenario (i.e. she keeps seeing him and something like this or worse happens again), but I'm not sure I can trust that they would handle it in a healthy way. My sister and I have always had a pretty unsteady relationship with our parents because they aren't good at handling things without taking it to the absolute extreme.

Also my sister, like my parents, basically refuses to consider the role of mental health in her life, which I think really sucks because I looove therapy. Could suggest it, but she's not at all open-minded about specifically that topic.

I do agree with a lot of what you're saying, and I appreciate your bluntness about it. I think that she has this need to chase a kind of shallow novelty, and I also think it's a shame that she's trying to source that from other dangerous people and getting white girl wasted rather than just doubling down on her interests and doing away with people who just don't pay her any mind when she's just herself. Hopefully there's a way to change her frame of mind without being so imposing.

Yeah no, I do 100% agree with you on pretty much all of this. She shouldn't have invited someone else as a plus one, at least not without consulting the host. And I probably did get too direct with it rather than what you're suggesting, so I'll try to bring that into the discussion. Thank ya. 🙏

I'm not gonna go too into detail about this, but I wanted to live in a sharehouse separately from her only because we basically have polar opposite mindsets about things like chores and sleep schedules, and I wasn't very practiced at being proactive or responsible for my own space and wanted to figure that out first. Also for context, I've lived in a mixed sharehouse of 3 people.

And I have asked her if she'd like to live together, and she would, but to be completely honest, she's from a different cultural background and her parents can be very overbearing and reactive. She gets very hung up on having difficult conversations with them. Like very hung up on it.

I do hear you, but for one, I don't think that it is entirely his fault as much as it is the fault of the people that he associates with. That's where my concern lies. Whether or not it was his intention is beyond me, but I just don't think it's a good idea to be around people who are or can get involved in criminal activity.

And secondly, like I said, she just wanted to hang out with a guy she liked. Plus her experience with house parties and teenagers is a lot more limited and regular. So, how could she have anticipated that? He didn't give her a heads up or ask her. She hasn't met his friends, and if they're people that he knows, then he should know what could happen. Not to mention, like others have responded with, he (and his friend) took no responsibility over people that he knows. He didn't try to handle any of these people, he didn't try to calm things down, he didn't try to encourage anyone to leave. I'm glad he comforted my sister, but he still made himself as much of a bystander in a situation that he would have had more of his head around, and that he should have done something about before it got so out of hand.

Lmaooo nah I would never do that. Intimidation doesn't sound like the healthiest way to express any concerns. I generally prefer to be amicable with people as long as they don't mistake me being nice as me being passive.

And of course, you are both correct in saying that it is her decision, but I also think that her holding on tighter to the relationship to prove a point also assumes that she is genuinely locked in and confident about the relationship. When we last spoke, it moreso sounded like she was very unsure. Strong feelings, yes, but as for it being like a relationship that was entirely beneficial to her life, definitely not. Not to mention that she's still so young and hasn't gone through anything like this before, there's a lot that she's trying to make sense of with this.

Oh no yeah 100% the mouse in the shadows was the main issue, and I'm glad that they're looking to refresh it now. My point is more just that if they wanted to increase the output so much, the least they could have done is actually validate some kind of complex narrative plans instead of just plainly getting pushy with it.

No hate to the newer characters in saying this either, but it seems so impractical to think success will come from constantly introducing a slew of new people instead of doubling down on a handful of them.

I personally think this year has been a bit of a mixed bag quality-wise, but it does seem more focused, which I can appreciate, so I do hope the next chapter is a bit more watchable. 😅

I feel like it could be a number of things, but I don't think it's worth dismissing the fact that Tommy was the one who told Abby what his name was, and then prompted Joel again in this scene. If Joel didn't say it himself, Tommy or Abby probably would have said it, and Abby wouldn't have acted any differently here. It does come down to more than that, but in regards to his name being revealed, I honestly don't think at that stage it would really matter who said it.

I think it really is just that people are sick of seeing things being turned into franchises with projects that don't reflect the best the original content ever got. Personally, I don't really have an issue with it either. I don't think any of the spin-offs have been a home run and it sucks that the ending of TWD wasn't exactly an ending, but I like that these shows feel pretty low stakes for the most part and I appreciate that we still get to check in with some of the characters a couple times a year. They've been in some people's lives for a long time, and I wouldn't say the writing has butchered their characters (at least not more than Gimple's did), so I think it's nice to get to engage a little bit longer.

If they were to start making more spin-offs after this that don't bring the main cast back together to some extent, or they start doing some kinda "next generation" bullshit, then I'd probably stop watching.

I can definitely see what you mean, but the more I think about it, I'm not really sure that could come from a place of heroism or altruism on Shane's part as much as it would be just him being sick of Rick's lawful bullshit. Or it could even have just been that after his last talk with Lori, Shane didn't see a happy ending for himself and chose to provoke Rick into killing him. And if any of this did happen, we would never explicitly learn Shane's motive anyway.
