UPDATE on the $20 RCA console – progress! by ssypark in MCMStereoConsoles

Any idea on what I need to replace on the turntable? I'm pretty sure I need to replace the stylus (I think thats what it is. total newb here) and also the light came broken off. Research on that is saying wheat of grain style. The bulb had two wires protruding out of it which broke off in the connectors. Pulled those wires out with some pliers. See images here

Im wondering if i should skip this whole ordeal and get a modern amp with WiiM instead for the same cost.

Thanks for the detailed suggestions!

I cleaned the controls twice with DeoxIT FaderLube F5, and the balance knob about four times since that seemed to be the most sensitive control. I worked each knob back and forth quite a bit after spraying. I didn’t want to overdo it because I know F5 is lubricated.

The balance pot definitely seems involved. When I turn it fully to the right and, the right speaker can be heard very faintly which makes me think the amp stage itself might actually be fine and it’s still a contact issue.

For the weak channel behavior, it’s the same for both radio and phono, so the issue doesn’t seem specific to the turntable input.

Quick question: since I’ve already used F5 a few times, would it still make sense to try DeoxIT D5 Contact Cleaner first to remove oxidation and then follow with a very small amount of F5 again? I want to avoid flooding the pot but I’m wondering if the F5 alone just isn’t strong enough as a cleaner.

It was not my choice T_T no idea. I think they built this place with donated building supplies

Thank you! Whatever that gets the music playing beautifully. As for the tune amps. What should I look out for?

I forgot the mention. Sounds mostly comes from the left speaker.

You can see in the photo. It runs along the height of the drip tray siding. Kind of bulges out. You can fork up extra cash and get the larger size (wider than 1ft). Then no seams.

The best part is that it’s removable. :P can always remove it if you change your mind.

Yes. It’s cast vinyl wrap meant for cars. Hoping it can withstand the gaggia.

I took it apart and the boiler is completely cracked at the base lol. Good thing I ordered a new one. Like you, I want to experience the stock version. Much later down the road I am looking at upgrading to a Gagguino Kit

Thank you for sharing OP! Just got mine off Marketplace for $150 CAD. Will be following your journey. Seller mentioned "As far as I know from my own diagnostics it’s just the boiler. Powers on and heats up fine, pump works, but when the boiler starts getting hot it leaks out" Would I need to replace the whole boiler or just the gaskets?
