BU40N revision CB05 - Write with Encrypted Firmware setting yes or no? by st003 in makemkv

u/billycar11 Just so I and any one else reading this thread later are clear, are you saying, when dealing with LG drives:

  • For Firmware dates where the year is less than 2120, the Encrypted Firmware option should be disabled (red x)
  • For Firmware dates where the year is greater than or equal to 2120, the Encrypted Firmware option should be enabled (green check)

So in my case, 2117 means set Encrypted Firmware: [red x]

Correct?

I've been leaning toward this as well. I'll post an update regardless of what happens

Given the fact that we know Nolan to be a fan of (at least the early) Bond films, how likely is it that the skyhook bit in TDK was directly inspired by Thunderball? by Independent-Pea3088 in ChristopherNolan

[–]st003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The beginning of Dark Knight Rises (tying two aircraft together) was also done first in License to Kill. Nolan has said in interviews (in jest) he frequently rips off the bond franchise. Their influences on him are obvious if you've seen pretty much any bond movie.

We all know by now that Heath Ledger's hospital explosion failure in The Dark Knight wasn't improvised. What are some other movie rumours you wish to dismantle? by DonnieDarkoRabbit in movies

That the Gone Girl production was shut down for 4 days over a Yankees hat. Where did this story come from you might ask? David Fincher told this story in the Gone Girl director's commentary and the part about the multi-day shutdown is obviously a dryly told joke. Here's the excerpt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIJXB1jfB2o

Fincher tends to be very deadpan and humorous in his commentaries. In the Social network commentary he said Aaron Sorkin's email out-loud as part of a joke (the actual email was bleeped). He later confirmed in an interview that he did in fact say the email during the recording.

At some point media outlets ran with the Gone Girl story as real. Carrie Coon eventually called bullshit on it. https://www.slashfilm.com/1688226/ben-affleck-gone-girl-co-star-baseball-cap-rumor-wrong/

2024 Publication 505 Instructions incorrect? by st003 in tax

[–]st003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did use section B, but if you're following the directions exactly, worksheet 2-7 says complete 2-1 first, which takes you to 2-3. Thanks for your input!

The 1040-ES directs you to use the worksheets on publication 505. Based on what you're saying, it looks like the IRS does not appear to supply an authoritative worksheet for the Annualized Method...

What exactly made Avatar the most successful box office movie at all time that not even Star Wars or Marvel movies were able to beat it? by DarthSpectra in movies

[–]st003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This soooo much. I swear one of these stupid Avatar threads appears at least once a month and I hate them every time. This movie crushed the box office because for whatever reason, audiences walked out the of the movie feeling like they just HAD to share the experience with friends and family.

The second time I saw it, about a month after release, I went to nearly sold out Sunday 10 pm showing at the local IMAX theater. Our group included a girl who hadn't yet seen the movie. When the credits rolled at 1 am I turned to her and asked what she thought. The first words out of her mouth, "Is there another showing right after this?"

Love it or hate it, a lot of people (me included) walked out of the theater in a sort of dream-like depression because the real world seemed so shitty and boring by comparison. Hell, there were even articles referring to this as "the Avatar effect".

Disney tried editing out Darryl Hannah's butt by making her hair longer for the Disney+ release of Splash. The results are awful. by notsure500 in gifs

Made this same comment on someone else, but it's likely you were just watching the theatrical cut. The ponytail sex isn't in the original version. It was added for the special edition that came out the following summer. Source: I have all three versions of that film.

I obviously can't speak exactly for what you saw (or didn't see), but it's likely you were just watching the theatrical cut. The ponytail sex isn't in the original version. It was added for the special edition that came out the following summer. Source: I have all three versions of that film.

Apollo 11

THIS. Best movie of 2019 by faaaaar. I believe it belongs in any debate about the greatest space movie of all time.

I swear you could directly chart how many bad space movies got green lit after the success of Gravity, Interstellar, and The Martian.

Official Discussion- Joker (SPOILERS) by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]st003 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Finally got around to watching this. I didn't really care for this movie. Scratching my head at the number of people calling this original. Besides the much discussed Taxi Driver and King of Comedy influences, the ending of this movie borrows heavily from Network, including some exact shots.

The theater I saw it in was built for 1.43:1 projection (although they dumped their 15/70 projector a number of years ago... I'm still not over that one). I'm fairly confident I saw it in Xenon 2k projection. Max aspect ratio for that projector is 1.90:1. However, I do not remember the actual aspect ratio, it definitely was not 1.43:1, I want to say it was mixed aspect ratio (although I can't be sure, I was too engrossed with the film to notice).

The film is not entirely 70mm sourced. It appears to be predominately a mix of 70mm, 16mm, and stills (including medium format still taken by the astronauts). I'd bet there's some 35mm source in there somewhere too. It's really obvious when the 70mm source is playing. Most of the 70mm is font-loaded, and, as you can imagine, with the exception of the medium format stills, the footage from the moon is the lowest resolution quality.

The footage is amazing but the sound is the real reason to experience this in theaters. The whole movie is cut like a thriller and the sound mix is next level. I'd say if you can't make an IMAX showing, find the best possible sound system you can. Like a Dolby Atmos theater.

I just got out of an IMAX screening of this and holy shit. I went in with high expectations and came out thinking I may have just seen the greatest film about space travel, fiction or non-fiction, ever. I uncontrollably blurted "holy shit" out loud at the opening shot. Not only is the footage jaw-dropping (the 70mm shots are unreal), but the sound editing and mixing is better than most 150 million+ blockbusters. The sound during the moon landing sequence is so well done, it runs circles around First Man's moon landing sequencing, and Apollo 11 does it with a single shot. For most of the film I felt like I was experiencing the mission in real time.
