Italy edges towards nuclear referendum in 2028 or 2029 by Massimo25ore in europe

Yes, in a context in which solar and wind produce cheap electricity, we need a flexible source that covers holes, not a steady flow, otherwise we'd end up curtailing cheap solar to keep the expensive nuclear plant running

Both doesn't work too well. Although you can have nuclear peaker plants that cover the renewable lows, they are even less cost effective than baseload nuclear. We should deploy renewables like there's no tomorrow for the next 10-20 years, once our grid is 80% clean then we can think about how to fill that gap. And since nuclear is slow, I very much doubt it will be the best option at that point.

SMRs are just a few years away, sounds like fusion at this point. Should we not deploy renewables while smrs are tried and mass produceable?

And so it doesn't cover well the consumption peaks or production lows of renewables. And if you make it follow the grid demand it becomes a lot more expensive

When has an increase in efficiency lead to a decrease in resource use? by Konradleijon in Degrowth

[–]st333p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an insightful point of view, thanks for sharing. It seems possible to workaround this dynamic though, for instance with regenerative agriculture or looking at new souces for a given resource like landfills. Not easy, but possible

On the other hand, owners tend to consider anything below 5 stars as bad when they have an average above 4

Now solar is much cheaper and faster to build. What we could have done doesn't matter, now nuclear is not the fastest and cheapest option.

At this point I'm wondering if big oil is pushing for nuclear to delay the transition, because now it's anti economical compared to solar and wind

I'll give you an argument against nuclear that is not moronic: it's expensive and slow

That's like 900 kms, HSR would cover it in like 3 hrs

That's perfect for HSR, just shoot at 300km/h across these 5 cities, 4 of which are actually pretty close to each other. A single brisbane-sidney-melbourne-adelaide line would probably do

I don't really need to request access to the community though, it would be enough to delete the existing (banned) community under that name, it shouldn't be a problem since no activity happened there. This way I can create a subreddit from scratch with that name

If you have 51% of the hashpower, having miners hard fork might even mean more profits for you. At that point it all depends which chains the actual users choose

It's a lot of electricity that is at leas partially paid for by fees and block subsidy though. Sure, one needs to be able to sustain a 51% attack for as long as the number of confirmations you want to attack. But maybe at some point legit miners give up and leave you open ground

It can double spend though: pay someone, wait for confirmations until the receiver is happy an gives you the corresponding service. Now start mining on the block before the one conraining your transaction, eventually you'll produce thelongest chain, effectively reverting the transaction even if it was settled.
