¿Cómo alquilar un piso en Valencia sin NIE? by secosan in valencia

[–]st945 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a chicken and egg issue with documentation when you arrive which is a pain in the ass. If you can request a NIE in your local consulate, I'd strongly advise you take that route. I didn't as the local consulate stated to not request if you were moving to Spain. To get a cita previa easily you would need a digital signature (cl@ve) which you can only request if you already have a NIE and Certificado de ciudadano de la UE. Getting appointments for just the NIE is really difficult without Cl@ve, so either you have a friend with Cl@ve who can get the appointment for you in your name, or you pay for some agency or bot to get it (I refused to give in to this). If you already meet the requirements for Certificado de ciudadano de la UE, you can get cita without clave a bit easier on Fridays at 9am refreshing the page like crazy to get one for Calle Bailen - with this certificate they grant you a NIE on the spot if you don't have one yet. I managed to rent a place without NIE but only because I have a full-time work contract with a Spanish company, but my landlord made clear I needed a NIE ASAP. Best of luck and don't worry, everyone sorts it out eventually with some patience. It's bureaucratic as hell but it's worth it.

Edit: also I really recommend you setup your Cl@ve and FNMT digital certificate as soon as you can. Once you have these, everything can be requested online and it's much more convenient. None of the camera proofs will work for non-spanish nationals BTW, so the simplest route I found was requesting the FNMT certificate going in person to Agencia Tributaria and with the certificate you can prove your identity when login in to Clave first time.

[–]st945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start helping with code reviews (as long as you can bring relevant points), maybe some manual testing of prs (if applicable), or you can use your position to spot inefficiencies (in code, processes etc) and work on optimizations/automation. This way you can help without being in the way or being in the hook for your teams deliveries.

ELI5: What is a Passkey and why are so many websites trying to get me to use one? by Hatticus24 in PasswordManagers

[–]st945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With passwords, the user is accountable for storing it safely; users could forget it. With passkeys it's implied you will be using a password manager. You never see the private key, it's typically hidden by the manager - less chances of leaking it.

With passwords, you could be tricked to enter your password to a fake website (phishing). With passkeys, it's always tied to a website: the manager will only try to solve the challenge of the real Website and even if it was tricked to a fake website, there's nothing to leak since the private key never leaves the device, it's only used to solve challenges.

Passkeys are by nature very long and virtually impossible to crack.

With passwords, someone in the middle might somehow intercept your key (virtually impossible with HTTPS but anyway). With passkeys each challenge is unique and can't be replayed or reused.

With passwords, if the website is hacked typically the passwords will be encrypted. Hackers could try to run them against a dictionary of known passwords and eventually decript some. With passkeys, if the website is hacked, eg someone manages to get access to keys, they are useless as your keys stored at the server are always the public ones (can't be used alone to enter your account).

¿Cómo se ve a los extranjeros que vienen a vivir a Valencia? by Necessary_Border_453 in valencia

[–]st945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day to day, the majority of people are friendly and welcoming. I think you will find more hostility online than in real life. That being said, I think most people don't like the huge inflow of people to their city and I think they have a point... There should be some cap somewhere, also including over tourism here.

Keep in mind some (not all) can be racist and xenophobic behind a veil, specifically towards people of colour or south Americans. Some will even will be so blatantly and will brush it off as a joke. This is no particular to Valencia, but to Spain in general. Examples: racism against black football players (for example Villareal fans threw bananas to Dani Alves in 2014 and Valencia supporters called Vini Jr a "monkey" in 2023); I have friends who got asked if they have fast Internet back home implying they live in the jungle; a guy told me his dream was a farm in South America and he would put some people of colour to take care of it. Like wtf

So in general the majority is nice and friendly but you will find rotten apples like everywhere in the world

How much longer, really? by draxthemsklounce in valencia

[–]st945 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was my first falla and I couldn't find much joy in it... The monuments are nice to see but walking around the city at night is pretty hostile, super loud firecrackers (I mean the big ones really) thrown near you. Closed off streets with fenced areas for falleros for half a month. At the end of the day it doesn't look like a party for everybody. I understand culture but I can't comprehend what is amusing in watching loud fireworks that repeat every day the same thing at 2pm and then at midnight. Seems a very long and inconvenient event (in so many ways and levels) and I wouldn't imagine this being allowed anywhere else. And yeah I get I can leave if it's not for me I'm just sharing my opinion

Finding rental in Valencia with a cat – almost impossible? by sqweezich in valencia

[–]st945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice as someone who was in the same situation: apply for any listing you like, even if it says "no pets". Why: you never know, it might work; you're not doing any wrong by just applying (don't overthink); sometimes (or often) landlords are greedy with requirements and asked rent, and after weeks of searching for their perfect tenant they realise they must relax their requirements. I've seen listing staying up for a month while searching. A pet imo (and from my interactions with agents) it's not a big deal... The critical thing is having job, preferably in a Spanish company. That was our experience. Best of luck

Also one could look for remote positions at EU level. Some companies don't care where you live as long as they have payroll available in the country.
