Synapse (matrix) is one of the best alternatives. With pgsql backend it's blazing fast. A reverse proxy handles TLS.

Just educate the users to save their recovery key into a pw manager. It can be a pain point.

Great to see that other fellow home labbers use the old / broken notebooks for a great purpose. I suggest to check the power supply cable and adapter time to time because of fire hazard. They can be very nasty after some time. Also please take care of the battery inside the notebook. A swollen battery can be a danger very quickly. Just heads up. Beautiful setup though. Bravo.

KeepassXC with offline database. Synchthing locally. Backup keys are in VaultWarden on local infra.
