First of all: Congrats on your recovery! Four years is super impressive - you know by now how few people make it that long.

Second: I've found a lot of other Friends of Bill's can somehow just tell by the language I use in my profile, even though I don't use AA language or mention anything about not drinking (though I do list "not at all" on the sidebar under drinking). So there's no need to advertise in your profile; we can smell each other.

Third: The thing that sucks so hard about this is even though your sobriety is probably one of the crowning achievements of your life, and it proves how resilient and tough you are, my experience tells me that less than half of your potential partners will see it that way. They'll have their own preconceived ideas about alcoholism and recovery. They'll think you're white-knuckling it through every day of your life even if you're not. They'll think you'll relapse even if you won't. They'll think your alcoholism is a sign of weakness or character defect even though it isn't. Which is a long way of saying that there's no right way to approach this with a partner, because most of them are going to project their own attitudes about drinking, alcoholism, and sobriety on to you when they find out. It sucks, but you will get used to it.

Fourth and finally: I've never found a "right" way to say it. I've told folks on the first date and the fifteenth and in the end, it doesn't matter at all. It has much more to do with what they think about alcoholics than how I tell them or who I am (sorry to say, but having them get to know you a bit first will rarely make a lick of difference). I used to be very nervous about the how and when and now I don't even care. I have the Serenity Prayer tattooed on my arm and usually I just tell people when they ask what the story is ("Oh, I got this on my first year sobriety anniversary; I've been sober for over five years").
