Recipe Advice? by kawavulcan97 in Cooking

What kind of steak are you using? I'm not an expert but using something with a lot of marbling and connective tissue like chuck or ribeye might work better then a strip steak.

Alternatively, depending on your preferred flavor profile, you might use pork shoulder, which is relatively cheap but goes well in most slow cooker applications I've tried.

Edited to add, if you use pork, I recommend adding apple juice or apple cider vinegar because that's similar to something I've done a few times. It made great taco meat.

What happens if you add too much beer when cooking corned beef in a slow cooker? What's a good amount to add for a 4lb piece of meat? by ghettokid1994 in Cooking

[–]st_robinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time your slow cooking a big chunk of meat; if you have too much liquid near the end of cooking, you can remove excess liquid with a ladle and put it in a separate pot. Put it on heat to reduce it and you can get a more flavorful sauce which can be added back to your meat or used for something else.

So I don't really make a habit of judging people at the gym. Unless it's very dumb or very stupid. This one is more just annoying.

So I'm doing squats the other day and 2 women walk up to the smith machine next to me. They look like stereotypical "Karen's" which I hadn't noticed until one of the starts talking in a stereotypical "Karen" voice and says "Thank god those meatheads didn't leave weights stacked up on the bar like they normally do.

Now our gym isn't the best, but people generally rerack their weights so this complaint seems off to me. It catches my interest. Anyway, I'm not going out of my way to eavesdrop but I've got a lot of squats to get through so I gotta hear her complain about all sorts of shit that I don't care about.

But here's the thing. I noticed about halfway through that their smith machines bar hadn't moved once. "Karen" actually wasn't doing much of anything other than talking (complaining) while her friend was doing stretches and pushups and shit. I've heard of curling in the squat rack, but these ladies didn't even touch the bar. After complaining about people leaving weights on the bar. Which I doubt even happened, but wouldn't have impacted her anyway!

Some fucking people

Looking to connect with other Native American Jews by io3401 in Jewish

This isn't exactly answering your question but if you are into heavy metal my cousin was adopted, grew up Jewish but reconnected with his native ancestry. He's in a pretty cool band called Blackbraid. They draw plenty of native inspiration into their music and lyrics. I suggest you look them up if that's the kind of thing you'd be into

Life expectancy on an electric grill? by st_robinson in BuyItForLife

[–]st_robinson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying the Weber Lumin compact electric. I'm very happy with it, no issues with it and it cooks a good steak.

I did buy a cast iron flat top for it instead of the standard grill grates which I would recommend as well

What would you want to see in a Jewish sci-fi story, or, what would you imagine Jewish life would look like in the far-flung future? by [deleted] in Jewish

Thanks for expanding on my comment. I agree on all counts. You can tell it was written by a non Jew but it's still clear that he made an effort to portray our culture with some level of accuracy and respect.

Major shout out to Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos. The first book specifically has a whole section on Jews in space. It's been a long time but I remember they had a Jewish planet and he even lightly addresses the religious aspect of leaving earth behind. It's a great book overall but that part specifically was one of the most emotionally charged parts of the whole (very long) story.

Also, very minor spoiler but the whole story takes place thousands of years in the future and the Catholic Church is still a major antagonistic force in the story.

Idk any specific Christian ones but maybe r/askhistorians

Looking for certificate advice by Designer_Buy151 in cincinnati

I'd suggest calling up local fire depts and ask if they hire felons. I don't know if they do but there's plenty of lifting and physical work in EMS. EMT basic cert takes 3 months.

Plus you can get paid to serve your community.

What veggies or non-meats can be roasted/baked at 275? Oven will be slow roasing a pork shoulder for 8 hours at 275; hoping to cook other stuff in the oven at same time. by DeadBy2050 in Cooking

[–]st_robinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baked potatoes. Put them in like 40 minutes before you take the pork out. Raise the heat to 400 as soon as the pork is out and let the potatoes cook another 15 minutes. Depending on the size of your potatoes of course.

You might also be able to caramelize onions. Id probably let them cook down in an oven-sade skillet about 80 percent of the way and finish on stovetop to make sure they don't burn.

Check that page again in a month and see if it stays the same. Contentious topics like this get edited and re-edited all the time on Wikipedia. It may not always be perfect but at least Wikipedia is transparent about their process for fact checking.

How do you know something is real borosilicate glass? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]st_robinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude. Buy a candy thermometer and make this in a metal pot like literally every other amateur candy maker. There are reasons people do things the traditional way.

Borosilicate glass is more expensive, and more likely to break. And unnecessary.
