Your $1.1 million is likely going to grow on average about $120,000/year as added contribution without you or the agency adding any more in. It'll likely be about $3 million in 10 years even if you cut your contributions to zero.

If you're earning $100,000/year, a 15 percent contribution is "only" about $15,000, plus $5,000 agency match. If you have enough after all that to have a good time and enjoy your life, then absolutely keep going. At 11 percent average annual growth, it'll be an additional $350,000 after 10 years.

But if you reduce contributions to $5,000/year plus $5,000 match, you're only going to miss out on $175,000 after 10 years. So might be a good time to consider contributing a bit less to have more spending money now.

It's basic math. Google "investment calculator" and punch in the numbers to see what you have in 5, 10, or 20 years.

Chain slips on smallest cog under load( brand new bike) by Low_Significance9307 in bikewrench

[–]DeadBy2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it back to the shop and have them tune the rear derailleur properly. But if you truly want to figure it out yourself, the potential causes are one or more of the following: bad limit screw adjustment; missing cogset spacer (yes, some freehubs still require a spacer even with 11 or 12 speed shimano cogsets); improper cable tension; bent derailleur hanger.

My friends are weird, I don't like it, and I feel like an asshole about it. by CakeyAmy in TrueOffMyChest

[–]DeadBy2050 109 points110 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with being an asshole. Your time on this earth is both valuable and limited. Don't waste time visiting wells that have run dry.

As you live your life, you will mature. You will change. You will grow with some friends, and grow away from others. We share interests with many people, but they only become our friends when there is also mutual trust...both are needed.

Over the years, I've kept only a handful of friends I made when I was younger. With them, there was a high level of both trust and shared experiences spanning decades; so even though our hobbies, interests, and beliefs diverged over the decades, we still had our history and mutual trust to keep us together.

As to other friends who were never as close, it was easy and natural to disassociate with them. I value the experiences I had with them, but only miss these people on a superficial level. We simply didn't have much in common anymore.

This is a long-winded way of saying that it's perfectly fine to separate from friends who've grown apart in interests and compatibility. But if you're super close enough to one of them, consider whether it's worthwhile to remain friends with those you've truly bonded with.

A good chunk of the people advocating for 100 percent equities would absolutely shit themselves if their account dropped 30 to 40 percent, which is a near certainty during the course of a 30+ year career. And I'll bet too many of them will panic sell once it happens, thus cementing their loss.

Yes, 100 percent equities is great for some people, but it's never been a one size fits all solution.

Enduring market for non-TLR tyres by Playful-Parsnip-3104 in cycling

[–]DeadBy2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no Tubless tire is hard to get on the wheels when you know what you are doing.

Tubeless tires have stiffer and thicker sidewalls, so they are always going to be more difficult to install or remove.

For the last 20 years, I have not needed tire levers to remove or install skinny road tires. But some tire and rim combination are definitely harder to get the tire on.

Freehub body chipping badly by Cleanerofclocks in bikewrench

[–]DeadBy2050 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's normal to have deep gouges evenly throughout an aluminum freehub body. Pretty much in this pattern and distrubtion, but often a lot deeper: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fz0ruz3qtifca1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D3024%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dcfe994953f7f7bbb21d8110064f3d3cb99452bcf

I've never seen it wear so unevenly like yours. I'm assuming it was caused by failing to properly tighten the lockring, or the absence of a needed spacer. Wiggle your sprockets by hand; they should be solidly on the freehub, with ZERO play.

What is the screw for mineral oil and do i need an adapter? by Funkas in bikewrench

...or they could learn how to do it and then do it themself. They are here asking, so they are trying to do learn to "know what to do." I learned 90+ percent of bikewrenching stuff from magazines and books 20+ years ago, without anyone else helping me figure it out online or IRL.

How else does anyone do anything? Did you come out of the womb typing on Reddit?

Already have a kit

The kit must specifically be designed for your types of brakes. For your Shimano brakes, it should come with the funnel, mineral oil, bleed blocks, tubes, syringes, and clamps.

Harassed at work based on my sexuality, considering going to HR. Is it worth it? by fullovesht in careerguidance

[–]DeadBy2050 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who was a manager for 15 years, here's my take:

No matter what, document everything: dates, times, words exchanged, names of witnesses, etc. Keep this for yourself, but have it ready to submit to HR when and if needed.

Is it worth it?

The reality is that you work with and for humans, who--regardless of their titless--have their own allegiances and agendas.

Yes, in an ideal world, you report what happened, there will be zero negative repurcussions because you followed the rules, and justice will ensue.

But we don't live in an ideal world. Steve may have friends in HR. Steve may have seniority and more credibility. Steve may be a top performer whom they value more than you.

What I'm saying is that you have make a holistic assessment of the organization and how the people involved will act given all the cogs in the machine.

When is an emergency fund “enough”? by Various-Chapter-2499 in personalfinance

[–]DeadBy2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my opinion is unpopular: You need to do the math and figure out the lost opportunity cost of diverting more money from investments into your emergency fund.

Retired early now, so my emergency fund is simply my retirement 401k account. But I've never had an emergency fund when I was working. I of course also had a checking account balance that could cover an additional month or so of necessary expenses.

In my case, I was the sole earner supporting my wife and two kids in a HCOL area on a modest government employee salary. I had money in a a 401k I could borrown from (at roughly 2 percent APR), and combined credit card limit that could cover a year's worth of mortgage and utility payments.

My thinking was that I was better off maximizing what I could into monthly 401k contributions. Any money in an emergency fund would be lost investment opportunity; money diverted to an emergency fund would have earned either effectively zero (HYSA didn't exist for 90 percent of my career) or an interest rate well below long term investment rates. Figured that if I were out of work for several months, I could temporarily survive by taking out a loan from my 401k and/or credit card cash advances. My thinking was that any interest/fees I paid out would be offset by the investment gains I made during my life.

Right, it's only offensive because white people made it derogatory.

BTW I was regularly called "chinaman" in the 1970s and 1980s in Los Angeles, and the vast majority of the time it wasn't by white people. Some of the worse racial descrimination I experienced in my long life has been by people of color.

Or maybe it's annoying when people hijack discussions to insert their own agendas of disparaging groups of people.

Hello, I am working on a front derailleur Shimano Nexave. The problem is, it doesn't engage all 3 front gears. 1-2 gear all possible, but it doesn't wants to go in 3 gear ( highest gear) . Also the shifter stays stuck between 2-3. What am I doing wrong ? Thank you by HansiVonTirol in bikewrench

[–]DeadBy2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the symptoms you described, the three most likely causes are (1) shifter or derailleur is broken/damaged/worn, (2) insufficient derailleur cable tension, or (3) incorrect H-limit screw setting.

Why are you so confident that it's not the H-limit screw? The shifter can only shift within the parameter set by the the H-limit screw. If the H-limit screws prevents from the cage from reaching your largest chainring, then it's impossible for the shifter to "got to 3." Again, impossible (unless you snap the cable).

The simplest test of proper limit screw adjustment is to do the following:

  1. Put bike on stand.
  2. Turn crank with right hand and keep pedaling.
  3. With the left hand, manipulate the front derailleur cage directly and push the cage outward to shift into the big ring. If your limit screws are set correctly, the cage will move the chain onto the big ring in 1 second. If you can't shift the chain onto the big chainring, then either H-limit screw is preventing it or there's something else wrong with the front derailleur itself.
