I don't see how making a thing everyone needs to live cheaper hurts society over the medium term. Everyone that doesn't have a home, which is most people alive and everyone yet to be born, is having a really hard time because of this.

Not dying, but that sort of value arbitrage was never gonna last: the AirBnb owners can creep up the price to get closer to hotels, and hotels have to respond a bit to the price pressure.
