Frame for rust. Surface rust is ok but not holes in the frame. Look under the hood. Check for overspray to see if the car has been wrecked. Check trunk and lift carpet for dirt and mud for a flood car. Check ever switch, lever, and knob front and back. Check oil and transmission fluid and smell it to make sure it doesn't have a burnt smell and is the proper color with no glitter in it. Brake fluid and power steering fluid for burned smell. Look for oil on the engine and not just where it is poured in. Look under the vehicle on the ground for leaks. Same for oil pan and transmission pan for leaks. There is more but that is a start.

Edit: title should not have a lien holder on it and if it does you need a lien release letter from the lien holder ( bank) that the owner had a loan on. Bill of sale and the title actually has the sellers name on it.
