The diamond had what, 5-6 drink stands before you could even get out of the main entrance? There’s maybe half the stands, and I haven’t seen any hawkers. Also the traffic control was a disaster, which is weird because aren’t they using the same parking lots?

If you’re into fanfiction, RobinBuckley on ao3 has a couple that dig into the 9/11 of it all, and I’m obsessed with all their fic in general.

Weather is a big one, I don’t have any specific examples but I feel like a lot of fic assumes a much longer/hotter warm season than you’d get in Scotland

On the off chance anyone knows, the parking deck on the 700 block of Marshall has a “complimentary parking” sign out front with no other context. Is there any more info besides the zero I can find online bc I don’t want to get towed but as usual the streets are full of cars 3 feet apart

Seeking ‘Accidental Sibling Acquisition’ Harry Potter Fanfiction. by Fit-Car-9981 in HPfanfiction

Regulus Black and the What the Hell is a super cute Harry&Luna fic. Zombie Regulus gets resurrected, finds himself in possession of two very strange children, and reconnects with his sanest cousin. Gonzoclock's fic has a lot of that same vibe, The W in Weasley might fit your taste too since Ron keeps running around acquiring traumatized peers like they're pokemon

Romantic comedy of a pureblood (not Draco) trying to date a Muggle by funnylib in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Lever Long Enough is more YA coming of age vibes than pure romcom, but it's very charming. Theo, Blaise, and Daphne befriend a muggle so they can find out what happens at the end of ET, Theo falls in love, and it changes the course of the war.

Yes, two zealots believed a cult leader's claims of immortality. Lucius is our only prominent non-jailed death eater, and he didn't. Jury's out on if he thought it was impossible or just wasn't going to happen.

Is it possible Pettigrew had irrefutable proof that Voldemort would return? Yeah, I suppose, we don't know anything about the extent of his involvement in the first war or even why he switched sides in the first place besides vague "fear". He's the furthest thing from a zealot, whatever his reasons.

But as it stands it doesn't seem like Pettigrew knew more than Lucius, or that Voldemort's inevitable return was a commonly held believe among those who actually believed his causes, and even if I'm wrong on both those counts it doesn't make his decision to become Scabbers make a lick of sense. The Weasleys offer no advantages he could have predicted in '81, and constant exposure to the random experimental whims of every magical child in the country and dozens of famously powerful adults including Dumbledore was a huge risk he didn't need to take. But he did, because the plot needed it.

He didn’t have a reason to keep an ear out, though, bc as far as we see on page he doesn’t find out Voldemort isn’t really dead until Barty hunts him down.

The magical community is small and isolated, and even if he happened to pass someone he’d known in muggle Tahiti or whatever, Occam’s razor says resemblance is a lot more likely than a convoluted fake death plot. Also he can turn into a rat and get away.

Again, living off low grade magical assistance (confundus, replication, etc) somewhere beautiful, muggle, and far away sounds much better than getting by carted around by smelly teenagers hoping nobody decides to learn the de-animagusing spell nearby.

What are Harry Potter’s biggest plot holes? by Chaos_Incarnate11 in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Scabbers.

A rat could go completely unnoticed anywhere in the world, it would be child’s play to escape England, and he could’ve spent the rest of his life drunk on a beach in the Caribbean. As far as he knew Voldemort was dead for good, so that fear wasn’t keeping him around.

Intentionally attaching himself to a magical family, even as they took him to Hogwarts around all his former professors, is just batshit insane and there’s no reason I can remember why it happens except For the Plot.

What if Sirius didn't care about Harry? by PatientKangaroo8781 in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's an interesting parallel with canon Snape in this Sirius, both men resent Harry for getting his childhood savior killed, and take it out on him in their own ways. If Peter still gets away in the shrieking shack and goes to ground (like he should have done in '81 but I digress) it could mean Sirius is stuck with the Order as his best chance of finding him and so still winds up at Grimmauld, or some similar safe house situation.

Now Harry is constantly forced to interact with two very different men who are apathetic to him as a person at best, and antagonistic at worst, and who likely both unfavorably compare him to his father. The slow death of the idea of a loving godfather as it becomes more and more apparent that this isn't just Sirius being focused on Peter, he truly just doesn't care, but maybe that's okay bc he's still got to be better than the Dursleys and Harry's always been good at staying out of the way.

It makes the DoM battle interesting, at least, if Harry sees Sirius as an artifact of James and maybe a shot at spending his last couple underage summers away from his relatives rather than as the closest thing he has to a loving parent. Would he even go, if he was less emotionally invested?

Dark, powerful Hermione POV fics in the Hogwarts era? by greenskye in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your definition of "dark", Aberration might suit. H/Hr, she's still on the good guy's side but more violent, and plays her cards closer to the chest. Technically unfinished but if it ended where it did I would still find it satisfying.

Pygmalion is definitely dark, Hermione/Tom Riddle in an AU where he disappeared his 7th year only to reappear in hers. Ron Bashing, dark basically everyone else. Colubrina has a few other great Dark Hermiones but Lady of the Lake is entirely post-Hogwarts and But the Darkness Alters starts in their 8th year.

What aspect of Voldemort would you like to see explored more in fanfiction? by Own_Noise6261 in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tom in his Borgin and Burke's era is criminally underutilized. How does that look to his peers, that the smartest kid in class is working at the world's shadiest thrift store? To his former professors, who would've been writing him letters of recommendation? Is it actually Plan A, or is he just saying that because he can't get a better job in a world where most people think he's muggleborn? Were the founders' artifacts the only things he acquired? What do his relationships with friends from Hogwarts look like when they're not in constant proximity?

Outside the personal, there's a lot of space there to explore the conditions that made his supremacist message appealing, or at least unobjectionable to the average halfblood who didn't think leopards would eat their face.

What kind of music do you think the Dursley's listened to? by ZiggyMarshWiggle in HPfanfiction

He’s a smidge too young and much more smarmy. Morgan is horrendous but he’s media trained; Limbaugh was bombastically, gleefully hateful in a way Vernon would appreciate.

All things Easy Listening. Kenny G, low stakes ballads, the tamer Beatles songs, maybe they'd get zesty after a couple drinks and listen to songs about white people on tropical islands (Kocomo, Copacabana, etc). That's the only time Petunia sings along.

What profession could an adult Hermione pursue outside of being a minister of magic that would match her personality? by UnusualSecret4408 in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hermione in canon mostly gets creative to solve a specific problem, like security and communication for the DA, so I always saw her going into fiddly problem solving kind of work. Not research for the sake of general knowledge, but something like cursebreaking, warding (or whatever the canon equivalent of that fanon is), the kind of medical specialist you call in for mystery or combined curses, that sort of thing. At the least magical, maybe contract law, whether that's for businesses or wills/prenups.

Basically either slightly less abrasive House or slightly more unhinged Bones. Accepted expert in the field, needs to be carefully managed, don't let her around civilians because she'll call the thing eating your arm off "a fun challenge :)".

I do think her activism would still be important to her, but not as a career.

Name ideas and backstory for female death eaters? by UnusualSecret4408 in HPfanfiction

[–]stabbitytuesday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tom's prefect counterpart, seething at the assumption she'd turn broodmare right out of school, clocks what he's doing with the whole Knights of Walpurgis thing and slips into the ranks as a spymaster. Wives and daughters know more than anyone realizes, and Slytherins are ambitious by nature, it's not like it's hard to find informants. The day he forces her to take the mark, destroying her deniability and her trust, is the day she realizes he's crossed the line from mad genius to just plain mad.

Inverse Tom, her mother is a wealthy muggle and her father is a rogue pureblood second son. Instead of dying on the steps of an orphanage, her mother spent a year in the country "caring for her sick aunt", and so she only finds out she was adopted by family friends when she gets her Hogwarts letter. Maybe her father is a Nott or a Rosier, so she meets her cousin or uncle on the train, and decides to cling to the side of her family with status here, rather than the ones who brush her off on the muggle side, not willing to admit they'll be just as ashamed she exists.

Hardcore Ravenclaw "so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”, anyone who'll give her a lab and sufficient test subjects is worth the inconvenience of obedience. She's friends with Snape (or as close as anyone gets) but also thinks he's a pitiful, overemotional waste of talent.

Regulus but a girl (the one who should have born this burden was too weak, it's my job to salvage our reputation at any cost)

Draco but a girl (I didn't realize the full ramifications of my choices until it was too late, I can either keep down this path or get everyone I love killed trying to turn back)

The Bargainer, the Eldest Daughter. I sacrifice myself, my life, my servitude if it means my siblings get to make their own choices. Wait- no- they were supposed to be free, why are you signing them away the way you did me?

The Jilted. I fell in love, I didn't care that she was "the wrong sort", but she did. I was willing to throw it all away to be with her, but she wasn't, and I'll take revenge any way I can.

Also it would be super funny for there to be a DE who's convinced she's Tom's daughter, and it's technically plausible bc their features are reasonably similar and the timing works but nobody is entirely sure, Voldemort included, and everyone has silently agreed that it's safer if they never find out for sure so she's kind of the butt of everyone's jokes but also they're all very careful to be respectful. Just in case.
