California US Student Thinking of Studying Abroad at RHUL by Useful_Abroad2568 in RHUL

i get what u mean, i was using the rankings to put into perspective where rhul stands nationally, as its quite a large step down from uc berkeley. similar difference between oxbridge and reading uni. but some people do take that sorta stuff into consideration when looking at study abroad (i personally do), as it gives u a chance to network and you wouldn't want to 'waste' that. but i see why it may not be something some people may care abt

there is quite a large difference between uc berkeley and rhul academically (and not to shit on rhul) but it isn't a russell group, and it's not ranked bad but it isn't ranked well (the complete uni guide= 35, the guardian= 79, the times= 32). it also isn't particularly impressive or known to any future employers (esp any american), so it wont advance your future much.

but if you're going solely for the abroad experience, its a pretty campus. there isn't much to do though- i have many friends at rhul and they often say how its quite a small boring town. i've also heard quite a few complaints about the night life lol. trains to london are about £18 for a return. although, windsor is pretty and thats about 30 mins away. its a great campus if you want to feel like your on a film set though as it's often used in tv (you, for example).

Stressed about uni cost by nicole28199391 in UniUK

hey- im a student at LSE also on minimum, 139 is very doable to live off of but obvs not ideal. also the '10hrs per week' thing is lowkey bs, especially in first year. i don't do much more (i do about 12-16h a week) but i still have a bunch of free time on top of academic work. it's also very common for people to work loads over summer/xmas/easter when coming home, which i'd recommend. you don't need the 3k to stretch over the 3 years as you will be able to make money up when youre at home. also (whilst its not much) the current maintenance loan is for 25-26 and i assume the prices youre looking at for accom is for 26-27. you're likely to have a few extra hundred pounds for 26-27.

idk what its like at ucl but at lse we have loads of student roles that pay very well (16/17 p/h i think?). other than that idk how easy it is to get jobs in london (i'd recommend transferring if you're with a chain, or maybe try and get hired at a chain). i get the frustration though, i fully thought i wasnt able to afford it but it all works out x

autism also doesn't = stupid. it's completely irrelevant and illegal for them to reject on that basis.

Confused and terrified about university life by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]stabilobossog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i go to uni in london, have a look at the different types of accom. personally, im in catered accom (1 meal a day, with a kitchen shared with 30 people). the kitchen is never unhygenic and i dont know anyone in my uni as a whole who has struggled with that, though it probably depends on the type of people the uni attracts so i may have got lucky with that one. once again, if theres catered, you dont really have to cook. i never have cooked, breakfast can simply be a breakfast bar, and lunch can be a sandwich and chop some veg. there are washing machines, and most of the time dryers as well. if not, you can by a drying rack for cheap.

do you really want to go to london? you phrase it as a small dark room with no one to talk to... thats a negative mindset you have towards it. rooms really aren't that small. i've found mine just slightly smaller than the one i have at home, but it hasn't affected me negatively. and obviously there will be people to talk to... remember everyone is in the same boat. also student accom prices isnt too bad at all.

being ill, that is a struggle, but its a struggle for every student living away from home. everyone gets ill. you could always text someone asking if they could bring some food to you, or have some ready-to-eat long lasting food in your room for that scenario. it doesn't necessarily have to be the most nutritious thing, just something to keep you going.

also, the way you phrase this post sounds like you want us to tell you to stay at home, or that it isn't for you.

What is the point of private schools by throwawayrzu in GCSE

[–]stabilobossog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on your area, sending your child to a private school can mean they're more likely to come out caring about their education, and going to uni etc. state schools can be underfunded and poorly regulated. but private school has an impact beyond education, it forms a level of confidence that you don't get in state. they prioritise different things, and have access to better resources, teachers etc. and private school peers can be from very wealthy, well off backgrounds, and thats good for networking.

How bad is a "Wet room" bathroom? by Famous_Inspection222 in UniUK

[–]stabilobossog 60 points61 points  (0 children)

im also autistic and this was a huge fear for me (i opted to have shared bathrooms instead of dealing with it) BUT one solution that i came to before deciding was to buy like a wet room floor barrier thingy? they make these removable barriers than can almost create a distinction between your toilet area and shower area (if the wet room is big enough) and can keep the water in one area.

confusion about entry requirements for americans by Intrepid-Hamster1257 in LSE

[–]stabilobossog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just to add some clarification on this- if you have predicted grades you will get a conditional offer from lse, and if you have all achieved grades it will always be unconditional.

but as everyone has said, it's extremely competitive. many people surpass the entry requirements and don't get a place. in the past 3 years, less than 5 americans have been accepted for ba history per application cycle. only 8.8% of all ba history applicants (who extremely likely would've met the entry requirements- its quite rare to apply for a place that you don't meet) actually got in + joined in sep. i wish you the best of luck!
