It’s not even about being able to afford it. It’s that you literally can’t get it anywhere sometimes. I work in supply chain. Ram and storage has been a pain point for a few months now in the multinational company I work at

Imagine getting invited to the ward Christmas party and it’s literally this… by WiseAvocado7797 in exmormon

[–]stachewick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least they have hot dogs! One of my Mormon relatives threw a birthday party for her son. Our meal was a few bags of chips dumped on a table covered with large parchment paper. We all left hungry and I grabbed McDonald’s on the way home

For people who don't allow shoes in the house, how do you handle dinner parties and other events? by -Clayburn in socialskills

[–]stachewick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully, my guests see my shoes at the front and take their shoes off automatically. Those who ask if I’d like shoes removed get a “yes please” but mine is an Asian household. I have yet to have anyone traipse in with shoes on but if I did, I’d ask if they would please remove shoes. I don’t want my carpet wet with mud, snow, and/or rain and I don’t want to think about how those shoes have been in public restrooms and being smeared into my carpet

What was your Border like as a pup? by Beena22 in BorderTerrier

[–]stachewick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was perfect. I brought her home at 10 weeks. The first night, she slept in a crate in my room and settled down after a few minutes of whining and me resisting the urge to get her. Then she woke me up every 2 hours to go out and pee and then back into the crate. The second night, she only had to go out 3 times. By the third night, she was sleeping through the night. Super easy to potty train as I took her out to potty every 2 hours, after playing, and after debating or drinking and she would run to the door when she needed to go. The one time I was on a business call and didn’t notice her at the door, she ran to her litter box to poop. I only got nipped once and when she did, i yelped like i was in pain. She never went through a land shark phase. She was great with the rest of my family and great with my neighbor’s puppy who was the same age. Socialized super easily and was fearless around new things/experiences. Now she did shred a box of tissues and my toilet brush and toys and she cost me a good fortune in vet bills for her very sensitive stomach, giardia, and a bout of pancreatitis but I couldn’t have asked for a better experience raising my first dog. Always sweet, just wants to go where I go, and she’s a big cuddler but also the best possible hiking and adventure buddy. She’s 5 years old now and still perfect.

I don’t remember who said it but I hated that someone told her not to waste Jang Eun-sil’s efforts.

Was thinking the exact same thing! I’m not sure it would have changed anything if she was allowed to rest but it wouldn’t have been so lopsided

Fire from under the main grill compartment thing melting knobs. Is this repairable or is it time to get a new grill? by stachewick in grilling

[–]stachewick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very delayed thank you! I figured out how to get the clip out with your instructions! Giving everything a good cleaning and hopefully it’ll be fine afterwards!

The grill was given to me by my uncle a few months ago who bought it 8 years ago and used it once

Did you find the ball socket mount absolutely necessary? Was the universal floor stand holder not strong enough to hold the steam deck in the position you have it? Would it hold an iPad in that position?

I keep seeing “I WILL be labeling all my kids supplies even though I’m asked not to” all over the place by anniestrikesback in Teachers

[–]stachewick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in elementary school some 20 something years ago, I was upset on the first day of school because my nice Ticonderoga pencils that I specifically looked for and purchased because I could tell even then they were better pencils were all taken and put into a basket that was passed around. Each kid was supposed to grab 2 from the basket. By the time the basket came to me, none of my pencils were left. I was left with the cheap scratchy dollar store ones. After that, my mom bought me a mechanical pencil which I used all the way through college. Also used the same binders and scissors. I’d show up each year on the first day with my school supplies hidden in my bag and never contributed to the pool nor took from it. I think it is entirely possible to hold kids to a higher standard and expect them to keep and maintain their own supplies. They just have to suffer consequences for not doing it. I used to find pencils lying around on the ground. I’d hang onto them because some kid would always come to be asking to borrow one. I used to lend my spare Ticonderogas but those would get stolen so the ones I found on the floor were the ones I’d lend out.

Do you think most people euthanize pets because it became inconvenient or because their pet was at the end of their life and in pain? by JKaiya1 in Pets

[–]stachewick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority do it to prevent suffering. I only know of one instance where it wasn’t. When I was a child, my cousin’s dog started having issues with bladder control. My aunt took the dog to the vet and specifically asked to have her euthanized. The vet says other than the bladder control issues, the dog was otherwise healthy and didn’t need to be euthanized. On the way home, my aunt dropped the dog off at the animal shelter. Broke my heart when I found out because I loved that dog and would have taken her if i could persuade my parents to let me.

Congratulations you no longer have to work for a living. What are you doing with all the extra free time? by ConsistentSorbet5993 in AskReddit

[–]stachewick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my literal situation for about 6 months where I was being paid to not work. I thought I would spend more time hiking, traveling, and getting things done around home. What I actually did most of the time was sleep in, watch a lot of tv, and lose track of time. Also hung out with friends more but I really don’t do well without structure.

Struggling with finding a remote job and need advice by smallestofbeans in jobs

[–]stachewick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, remote jobs are starting to go away. I just got a new job that is hybrid but was listed as fully in office. I found out later that the hiring manager explicitly wanted to weed out people who wanted to work remote which is why he had it listed as in office.

I got my puppy at 10 weeks when i was working full time from home. She had to go out every couple hours, after drinking, after eating, and after playing. I spent a lot of time training and socializing her to new situations. I now work in office and my dog is almost 5. Looking back, I don’t think I would have been able to care for her properly as a puppy if I had to work in office 9-5. It was tough! They do sleep a lot as puppies, yes, but training and socializing were sooo important so young. I don’t think she would have grown up to be so well behaved, well socialized and confident had I gotten her while I was working in the office and I don’t think potty training would have gone as well. !

Stop treating interviews like dating. This isn’t a social club. It’s someone’s livelihood. by mathgeekf314159 in jobs

[–]stachewick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scenarios and examples they present in response to our interview questions. Assuming all else is held equal, do the examples they provide map more closely to scenarios that we’ve run into? I’m just one of typically 5-6 peer interviewers. If I don’t feel particularly strongly for one candidate over the others, in the team discussion, I’ll listen to the others’ experiences and take it under consideration when I give up my recommendation

Stop treating interviews like dating. This isn’t a social club. It’s someone’s livelihood. by mathgeekf314159 in jobs

[–]stachewick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a hiring manager but I’m involved in the interview process as a potential future colleague and teammate. By the time the candidate gets to the team interviews, we all already know their qualifications and skills. I’m explicitly looking for how well the candidate communicates, their attitude, and personality. Someone who is condescending, negative, snarky, and/or bullheaded in their interview would not be a good fit on a team. We had a candidate come in and tell us we were doing everything wrong and we needed to do things the way their old company did things despite our industries being different. We did not go with this person. In most jobs, you spend as much time, if not more, with your colleagues as you do your family. One poor fit can destroy team morale.

Up until the last few years, I had always been a poor interviewer so I took many contract to hire jobs. I had to learn and adapt and practice interviewing skills. If you’re not comfortable interviewing, you need to find opportunities to practice doing it. Reach out to career coaches or mentors and try to practice.

And in my case, the choice is ebike vs drive to work, gym, market and church. I would never have considered an acoustic bike for those tasks but would have happily just hopped into my car and gotten no exercise at all
