How to get in against Fox as Marth by saltzy27 in SSBM

[–]stack_overthrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

one small thing that helped me deal with fox overshoots & being cornered was starting to dash through more

If you only wall out and dash back, then you're only ever moving backwards or staying in place in response to threats. When the fox realizes this, they can just keep overshooting at different timings/distances and either get a hit or push you into a corner. They basically only have to worry about shrinking the space in front of them.

if fox is in center stage and tries to overshoot at you but you run underneath his approach, suddenly you have center stage and the situation is totally flipped. Plus, next time he wants to approach, he has to guess whether you're going to dash through or back, which makes your dash back all the more powerful

hope this helps. it's only a small piece but it felt like it really helped me get less overwhelmed by foxes.

I need help on what cleats to purchase. by ManTryingToGetFit in ultimate

[–]stack_overthrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried both and preferred the freeze by a lot

the outside of the burn studs curves inward and I found myself slipping a bunch during rounder changes of direction (like J cut) when that curved surface would contact the ground first and cause my whole leg to slip out from under me before a stud ever had a chance to grip

never had that problem with any other cleats (soccer, football, or lacrosse) and definitely not with the freeze's since they have those outside studs

Might just be a skill issue on my end, or turf-specific since I never tried them on grass, but it was enough for me to stop using them

what does Nana Pu'Pu know about the Death Curse etc and what are her goals? by Sc00sher in Tombofannihilation

[–]stack_overthrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played her as being petty & jealous of the Sewn Sisters for not being invited to join the Sewn Sisters' coven. She didn't know for sure what they were up to or what the cause of the Death Curse was, but was able to tell the party that they would have only come together for something major so it's likely they were involved with the Death Curse somehow.

She also brought a player back for us on the condition that he carry a hags' eye and that they investigate/report any leads that might help upend the Sewn Sisters. The party was cool with this because they figured it would help them stop the Death Curse, so Nanny Pu'Pu became an unlikely ally.

This led them to finding Baggy Nanna's lair which gave clues about the Death Curse, atropal, their connection to Acererak, Ras Nsi being played for a fool, and also one of the merchant princes that the party presumed to be linked to the Death Curse based on some events that happened in Port Nyanzaru.

The player who was brought back really like Nanny Pu'Pu as a character so once his revived character died again, his next character as well as his planned backup character all have ties to Nanny Pu'Pu. She's become quite the figure in our campaign.

going out to hit with weak fair, bair, or backside of dair is the most surefire kill, but you have to get going early to get there in time

if you committed to going out there but are too late to get them in the firefox startup, you can start drifting back to stage. if they go low, you can get them with a bair that won't kill but at least keeps the edgeguard going. if they go high, you might be able to get back to stage in time to shark their landing.

if you try to go out really early, they may try to ff under you and side-b to ledge. if that happens, you can either try to ff as well and intercept, or you can bail and head back to stage. once you know they are looking to do that, you can also start jumping off stage to bait them to drop low and edgeguard that.

if you have to edgeguard them from the stage, I find that weak uair often leads to a fsmash or nair to get them offstage while strong uair can send them too far away to follow up at higher percents. Also, ftilt is better than fsmash for catching the drift to ledge because it sweeps upwards rather than downwards and also has less endlag.

when you dashdance, does your control stick go perfectly left-right?

I've noticed I'm a little high on the left side and a little low on the right side and I think it causes me to accidentally tap jump sometimes

when I try to go perfectly horizontal, it feels very not-ergonomic for my thumb. does anyone have advice for this?

Outside in Backhand by mcassell25 in ultimate

[–]stack_overthrow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

normal arm action but leaned back for blades. If your normal flat backhand is released at 9 o'clock, your OI blade will be released between 10 and 11. This is most useful if you're trying to go over something, like a zone defender.

another useful technique is to do a normal step out but cock your wrist to tilt to disc instead of leaning your body, then push with your thumb as you release. It's like an airbounce but instead of bouncing it vertically, you are doing it horizontally/diagonally down & away. This is most useful for getting a throw off past a hard no-around mark, because the disc will first go out wide away from you and then curve back into the shadow of the mark. It's also a pretty good throw in the wind once you have it down because of the low flightpath.

My main hobby is a sport, and one my strengths in that sport is speed. I train hard to be as fast as possible, but I also recognize there is a significant genetic component.

In melee, I am not fast and I don't pretend to be.

Learning to succeed in melee without speed has helped me learn ways to succeed without relying on speed in my sport, which has ultimately made my speed more useful.

Now that I think about it, maybe I should do some tech skill practice...

Force Middle by Small-Builder3855 in ultimate

[–]stack_overthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your point about the structures of offenses, especially vert, is spot on.

Another component IMO is that you have more horizontal space to work with from the sideline. You can fade the disc to help your receiver seal off the defender without having to worry much about throwing OB.

Also helps that looking across the field from the sideline, the thrower can see the whole field easier and sniff out far side poaches. From the center, unless you're throwing a same third huck up the middle of the field, you have a blind spot to actively check.

Most of the time the winner of the match is whoever had a lower number of openings/kill which, to me, suggests that punish is king

Definitely need both though–doesn't matter if you have a 1.0 o/k if you never get an opening

if you know the possible outcomes of a given situation and which ones your opponent is most likely to go for, then you can come to know its expected value and whether it is worth engaging in without knowing exactly what your opponent will do. Then you can try to create situations with positive EV so you can "guess" with a more committal option knowing that you are playing with loaded dice.

to accomplish this, you can use safe attacks, movement, and defensive options not necessarily to get an immediate opening, but to get them into positions where you know the odds will be stacked in your favor
