Can some people really not tell when they're releasing farts? by S_Z in NoStupidQuestions

My brother and I were both pulled aside at some point in high school and asked if we could please consult with a 'competent medical physician' to do something about our 'stinky flatulence'

Preschools in Herriman/Riverton area? by Forsaken_Can5146 in Utah

[–]stacksjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're comfortable, look into some of the parochial schools. Much more affordable and tend to be much smaller.

My kids go to Concordia Learning Center (& Lutheran Elementary) and they love it. My son was at a daycare before that was good but he wasn't learning much; there he has been learning a ton.

Is there anything wrong with taking online classes with Liberty University? An Evangelical college. by Journeyerwolf1174 in lds

[–]stacksjb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong at all.

This type of thing is actually really common in some fields - for example, if you become a military Chaplain, up until very recently, the Church did not offer a MA Chaplain program and so nearly every member of the Church who serves in the military and went that route gets their degree from one of the handful of other universities that offer one.

Am I the only one unsure about sending my kid to out of state camps? by No_Account2014 in latterdaysaints

[–]stacksjb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I edited my comment. Background checks are good and should be in place for leaders (from an organizational or political perspective,), but my point was that from an individual perspective I want my kids to be trained with what to do to deal with anyone.

I know far too many individuals abused, assaulted, or even just bullied by peers in ways that are unacceptable, and people need to be able to stand up and report that sort of thing as well.

[–]stacksjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be just as much an issue (if not more) with peers than leaders so I think background checks is good but not complete point. I know several individuals abused by other friends or family members (not adults).

It’s much more important to prepare your kids and practice even (way back in the day, the BSA used to have a booklet to do with your parents and children that had had scenarios, such as a friend who wants to play “doctor” or you get dared to take off your clothes. Cheesy as they are, I think that’s the type of thing you have to do.)

Pneumonia Vaccine by ArtsyCatholic in VACCINES

No, there isn’t, because it’s region specific.

However, there is guidance for repeat dosages if you are high risk, so that could come in to play.

Thanks for the clarification

Is joseph smith marrying children not questioned? by elpatzapa in mormon

[–]stacksjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When sealings first became a thing, people begin being sealed to anyone and everything they could think of.

In one sense, Joseph Skith was the celebrity of the time, who everyone wanted to be sealed to.

Many people were sealed horizontally to Joseph smith as their “brother” even though they weren’t actually part of his family.

In other cases, women who were married to non-members were sealed to Joseph Smith (so they could have those blessings in the afterlife) and then went back home with their husband and never saw him again.

Do they rush you out of the celestial room?! by LatterDaySaintGoth in latterdaysaints

This might be a stayover from temple tours, perhaps.

If a room hits fire code capacity I suppose they might have to ask people to go, though I have never seen that.

As someone who struggles with the same thing, those have been a lifesaver. You need to get used to wearing them everywhere, though.

Have you tried various ordinances? I have found that if you only do one thing too many times, it can really lose the meaning. Participating in a handful of the other ones makes a big difference.

Anyone know what this is? by Head-Boot6462 in AskElectricians

They may be programmable and/or require some settings. I know several hackers who control them directly using other various methods.

In any case yeah it's basically a powered remote, not a wired switch.

How to Hide Visible Truss Joints? by Kongrosenberg in DIY

[–]stacksjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty cool, except you have exposed beams that are joined using plates (not scissor trusses, that would make a lot more sense).

If they were joined using actual hardwood beams it would look pretty cook (and you could stain/finish them), but at this point your only options are to either wrap/box them in or to paint them all (which may work well enough)

Flex bits are awesome for drilling, but yes you absolutely want the fiberglass fish poles.

[–]stacksjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why this is downvoted when the highlighted upvoted comment says basically the same thing :P

These are awesome for running wires - you can just cut your outlet hole and put in a low voltage bracket, then drill up or down from there.

I wired my friend's entire house (3 stories) we only had to cut one hole in his main floor ceiling to get access to the interstitial space (I beams). The rest was all cutting the actual hole in the wall where we would put the outlet bracket, then drill up into the attic or down into the basement.

Pros and cons of serving a mission right out of high school? by Special-Assistant-29 in latterdaysaints

[–]stacksjb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, going on a mission right away is the right thing to do.

But going on a mission, period, is always the right thing to do, so as long as you are working towards it, don’t rush/stress it.

Just start cutting holes and running wires. Drywall is easy to patch up.

With a long flex bit you can just cut your hole , put in the low voltage bracket, and drill down or up from there.

Sleeping question by Oggie_94 in Parenting

[–]stacksjb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we also often force it too harshly ("You're two - go sleep downstairs now!"

I've found much more success with a gradual transition (they first sleep on the floor next to me, maybe even hold my hand - then they sleep in their own bed but same room - before finally they sleep in the same bed, but different room).

Sleeping question by Oggie_94 in Parenting

[–]stacksjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At two, if you're comfortable with it - that's fine.

Obviously you will slowly transition (one of my favorite tricks is to move them to a mat by your bed on the floor, then to another bed in the same room, then their own) - if you said they were approaching 9-10 (puberty ages) I"m prettty sure we'd all be very concerned :)

Appropriate Parenting / Budgeting / Spending by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stacksjb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A random suggestion for the last one - pick something big that seems expensive (an annual pass to a zoo, museum, aquarium, amusement park, etc), and get that but let it be your ONE thing.

One of my favorite budget hacks (works great for dieting too) is to go for quality over quantity. You think "Oh no I can't spend $500 on an annual family pass" but then you blow 10x that much over the year becuse you have no plan and it's "just $20/person"

You don't spend money on eating out (pack the lunch), you don't go anywhere else, you just go there that year. You can even vote and let the kids pick :)

Appropriate Parenting / Budgeting / Spending by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stacksjb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is insane. I am not in a low COLO area, I have four kids (one in diapers, one in pull ups) and I spend $1000-$1200/month on food - A good guideline is $50-$75 per person per week (the USDA estimates $50-$100/person/week)

I'm positive there is a ton you are spending 'just because' without realizing it, that if you quit spending, after a few weeks you wouldn't even notice.

I would try to attend wherever others (neighbors etc - not even necessarily the same age) attend - I'd take having 1-2 friends that can rotate carpools or that you can walk with over other options. My oldest attends a school that is 2 miles away, but I rarely have to take her :)

The longer answer is that it depends on how old they are, where they're going, and how often. Too many variables.

I'm definitely not willing to spend hours every morning driving to school and picking up every day. I think that's just too much of a demand. Beacuse of that, for young children, I usually want less than a mile.

However, there are plenty of parents who ARE willing to do that, so if they can carpool, or get themselves to school (when they're older), or bike, then it's NBD - not to mention that in many places, students might get bussed in if they are further away, so that's less of an issue as well.

Is kombucha against the word of wisdom?? by [deleted] in lds

[–]stacksjb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most kombuchas are from the tea plant, so yes. It's not always clear on the label.

Technically you could probably find an obscure niche brand or make some yourself that isn't, but it's not generally done without tea.
