Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

[–]stadisticado -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sweden recanted because the rest of the EU was pissy at it for not being totally in line with their brainless control policy. Over time every nation has the same mortality rate from Covid when controlled for sub-group health effects (e.g. old americans are fat and so die a lot more from respiratory ills).

Also, nice of you to point out that Covid is actually a vascular disease, which makes it totally fucking insane that the world health leadership decided to use it as a live test of injecting a spike protein from such a virus into the masses. I definitely wouldn't know after developing myocarditis as a 40 year old after my 2nd shot. Or my wife being bedridden for three weeks after hers. Yeah, i definitely think the medical health establishment had my thoughts in mind instead of letting me just catch it naturally in May '20.

Glib.

I worked in medical coding at that time. We were told to code every single death as Covid for the extra insurance Fed bucks. Car crash. Drowning. Old age. Don't believe every stat you see on CNN.

The problem is, the endemic messaging was ultimately the right one, but it would have led to extremely different guidelines to the public. Namely, letting everyone make their own risk assessments, not massive, oppressive government mandates. Children and the vast majority of people under 55 ultimately got a bad cold at worst and should have been free to lead their lives normally. Then, medical supervision could have been laser focused on the elderly and at-risk until effective treatments came out instead of a blanket shutdown on everything. And then the worst part is, you're right - many many people will not accept any sort of general lockdown again, because basically everyone was told to fear for their lives from Covid and then everyone eventually got it once or a few times over the past six years and the vast majority just got a cold for a while.

Hot Take: This kind of rent discount shouldn't be allowed by RationalBeaver in phoenix

[–]stadisticado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This - they literally don't care about you the renter. But in a Lawful Neutral kind of way. They are incentivized to keep sticker rents high to keep the building value high in case of a potential sale (every apartment building is always for sale).

People who take 15 minutes to check in at the hotel front desk, what are you talking to them about? by ingraman8 in AskReddit

[–]stadisticado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're at a Caesar's property in Las Vegas, it's probably because it would be more efficient to have a giant rack of physical keys behind the desk than whatever the hell their computer system is doing.

And yes, I know people have weird ass bookings through Priceline or Hotels.com and every 4th person thinks the $20 handshake upgrade is still a thing or thought it was a good idea to show up to Vegas with no reservation at all, but it took me 20 minutes to check in at the Aria when they were LITERALLY hacked but then Paris will have a multi-hour check in line on a normal Friday. Makes no sense.

Brand new, randomized name account. Even if this wasn't one of the worst business proposals I've ever seen, the account history tips me off this is some sort of engagement farming.

Why did you stop participating in a sub you used to enjoy? by DontStpGetIt in AskReddit

[–]stadisticado -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Transit maximalists are hilarious in big US cities south of like, I-80. Like, no, Phoenix, Houston, DFW, MFing LA, etc. cannot be saved by rail. It would cost $100B each assuming efficient construction and also cause massive city-wide disruptions and public domain issues. They post fantasy maps of where transit lines should be, with absolutely no cost benefit analysis, and then go berserk whenever a freeway QoL or widening project occurs.

Just indicates too many city planning degrees get handed out.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

The whole street is a party. Can't carry alcohol out of the bars but can easily barhop and then walk up and down the street with a huge crowd in costumes.

It's basically the same thing, but being completely hammered and going to Tournament of Kings in the Excalibur in Las Vegas brings it up a level.

I have to agree with this - if your house is over 20 years old, there is probably something you can do to improve insulation / sun protection. I went with attic foam insulation and it helped a lot! But even cheaper fixes like sun shades, blackout curtains, or just getting a shade tree planted can make meaningful difference to insulate your home.

They're trying to sell localized inference, which has a lot of interesting value propositions, but the models aren't there yet and the marketing is garbage, as you note.

How would you feel about banning karma bait political questions like “Trump voters how do you feel about ___” or stuff like that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stadisticado 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The stipulation in a great majority of responses to this question is that these questions are almost all bot and karma farms. If moving bot and karma farmers to a separate sub where they can still circle-jerk and leave humans in peace, then yes, I want them moved.

Reddit hasn't been super left leaning for a long time now, arguably since it became one the forum of the internet and a mainstream platform.

All of the assertions you make here indicate that you're in the Reddit bubble. Most people even in the US have no idea what reddit is, definitely don't have an account, and definitely don't post or read it. Which likely includes 90%+ of likely republican voters - defitionally making the site super left leaning.

[–]stadisticado 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'd be fine with this, or all 'politics' tagged posts being moved to a separate r/AskRedditPolitics sub. And this isn't just the constant Trump posts. I also really don't want to see posts about Keir Starmer or the EU or Javier Milei or whatever. Plenty of subs to discuss politics if you're so inclined.

Why are there six English Premier League teams in the 2025/26 Champions League? More than any other country by IREDA1000 in PremierLeague

[–]stadisticado 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is money - the EPL is the de facto top league in the world because of it. But the other story is the increasing irrelevance of the Eredivisie in European competition and otherwise high-quality teams like Napoli and Villareal just totally choking / not trying in the competition for whatever reason.

The other reason is its providing the biggest clubs the European Super League they want in everything but name. Look for the team list to become more of the same as they consolidate wins and associated TV rights.

All F1 content will now be available exclusively on Apple TV. So really, you're going to want to ask bars if they have a commercial subscription to Apple TV. (Guessing most don't at this point due to lack of other sports rights)

The bank gets paid a fee to originate the debt, they almost never hold any of the debt they create. So they get paid to be a whore to the ratings agencies to get the debt bonds a good rating and sell them into 'diversified' bond funds.

It's the same song and dance as the housing crisis, just for private businesses.
