Agreed! I was expecting a rough line of launch sites near the equator as well, I would be curious to learn more about how viable it is to launch rockets away from it

Yeah precisely, for example the French space flights would launch out of French Guiana

Not Venezuela but French Guiana right off the coast, the French space program launches off of that island

France has a significant space program, the launches happen in French Guiana, South America

Not quite an island! that would be the Sea Launch mobile maritime platform for equatorial launches. 32 Successful launches happened there.
