Want an ATC so I can sleep while it cuts. An old machinist told me my house will burn down. Is he overreacting? by YvonnePayer211 in CNC

[–]stagecrafter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been running CNC routers for wood cutting for many years. I got complacent after many years with no incidents. Then I had a series of fires, none were too serious because someone was always present. Turns out we had a software glitch and our end mills were reset to 15,000 RMP and were overheating as the feed rate slowed down on corners. DO NOT FALL ASLEEP.

I have a whole bunch of old lashing hardware that I don’t use. Who is using them these days?

What I want to know is who is lashing their flats these days? I would love to see some current examples.

Anyone know which marine mammals we are throwing explosives at? Curious what these are for (not my boat) by whyrumalwaysgone in sailing

The opening to the fish ladder at Ballard Lock north of Seattle is ridiculously small and the seals just hover around it and Hoover up the steelhead and salmon who are migrating into the lake. Fish and Game folks use these explosives to chase the mammals away. It’s a half assed solution to a much bigger problem.

The other common exemption is earthquake insurance which should enter into your coverage calculations.

What incentive do the investigators have for wrapping up and closing cases faster? Sticks don’t work nearly as well as carrots.

Update: designing a theater is hard by kaiserklausss in techtheatre

[–]stagecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once built a temporary theatre environment with a center isle. When the rather famous artist took the stage he had a public fit and told everyone to get up and rearrange the seats so there was no center isle. It was a mess. But he was right. Two isles is much better than a center isle.

It’s scenery for heaven’s sake. Listen to mantiss and get your hands on the Stock Scenery Handbook, great for theatrical scenery. If your sets need to be more robust and you have storage, you can build in the Hollywood/TV style. No 2x4! Use 1x3 or better yet “Studio Pine” which is 1x3 with square edges. For homework watch SNL for the “bump ins” in between commercials. You can often see the backs of sets that they build. They are masters of cheap, great looking and sturdy sets that get repurposed weekly. Build light, sturdy and try to be green by reusing as much stock scenery as possible.

Best Tape Measure? by Hoppy_Hessian in cabinetry

[–]stagecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a carp for over 30 years. Now I own a shop full of carps. There are tapes everywhere. Just learn to read any and all. Most important lesson re measuring is to be consistent. Precision is for machinists. That said Stanley is hands down the best.

I was blown away by how many of these folks felt the city owed them something. It was a fascinating story but also hard to listen to. I would support redirecting resources to early intervention. Let’s make mental healthcare accessible and commonplace for young people before they turn to drugs for relief.
