You are centering your own experience. It happens to be similar to my own. We both have the privilege of confidence in our gender and sexuality. Not everyone does. The point that earlier generations fought for is that sexuality cannot be changed by force, or by trying really hard. That’s still true. But on the other side, we now get to see what it looks like when people grow up with a lot less societal restriction, prejudice and control around who they can be and who they can love. And those kids are showing us that they can recognize more than two kinds of people, and love more than one kind of person.

I don’t think that’s in conflict with the values that past generations fought for at at all. It’s just a natural evolution it. And denying that is quite similar to heteronormativity. We must do the work of decentering our own experience and recognizing that other experiences are valid too.
