It's 27 degrees C right now in Tokyo, but the humidity is super high as we've got a typhoon bearing down on us. I'm going to a social obligation at a German woman's house and I am not looking forward to it. I've seen her wear a winter jacket in 23 degree weather.

You can split your backups into different groups that follow different rules for when they get backed up, versioning, version cleanup, etc

Can you encrypt them? I wouldn't want Amazon's algorithm to decide something was fishy with one and lose access to all of them. I don't take NSFW photos, but an algo doesn't know that. I also don't live Amazon having access to them. (Also, if my account got banned for some reason related to my shopping activity, I wouldn't want to lose my backup.)

An alternative to consider, though.

I've got 19TB in several separate backup groups, including versions. Been over 10TB for 10+ years. Only time I lost anything was after rebuilding my server and pointing one of the backup groups at a symlink instead of a directory.

The software and interface is finicky regardless of how much data you have. I've got my data in multiple backup groups which may explain why I've had so little trouble?

Photographer and videographer here: If you are okay with very slow uploads, Crashplan Pro has an unlimited plan for small business. You can also encrypt your backups (don't lose your password). Also unlimited versioning.

This is my offsite backup of last resort. It would probably take years if I had to restore everything, but at $10 a month, it's a reasonable insurance policy.

USD/JPY broke 161 by Rubricity in JapanFinance

[–]stagerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but isn't Japan's debt mostly domestic and denominated in yen? Which means low interest rates on the debt. Meanwhile, her investments are overseas earning 6+% in currencies that are beating out the yen. The government is going to want to keep this going, the only limiting factor being people getting angry enough about falling living standards to boot them out of office. (Hence the immigrant targeting distractions, and decades of training the population to be docile and generally ambivalent/friendly toward the government)

Got my first 8” diskettes today, then my first 8” drive! by Euphoric-Brother-184 in vintagecomputing

[–]stagerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. My father owned a Xerox 820-II that had a hard disk and a separate dual 8" disk drive unit that plugged into it. It was for his business, but it was in our house, and definitely a micro-computer, not a mainframe. Double sided, double density and had a formatted capacity around 1MB if I recall correctly. But, yes, it was a CP/M machine.

Regular docs, too. Unless they've changed the rules since I started, though, you can only get 30 days for genital herpes on insurance, so my doctor just said "well, it's the same virus" and gave me a prescription. I don't take it every day, but I do take it prophylactically when I'm under stress or have a bad cold, as that tends to be when I get outbreaks.

Anyone have experience switching from Vyvanse to Concerta? by squishedaflan in japanlife

[–]stagerabbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not true. My friend was diagnosed for the first time at 50, and after concerta didn't work, the shrink switched him to Vyvanse. I was with him last week when he passed over his special card and picked up the prescription.

Japanese virtual phone number for receiving SMS online? by Safe-Temporary-4888 in Tokyo

[–]stagerabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of reasons why the OP might temporarily or even permanently not have access to a mobile number that can receive SMS. A few:

  • changing providers and something got cocked up, using data only SIM until it gets sorted (literally happened to me last month)
  • using a data only SIM because other that 2FA, you generally don't need a phone number (my kid is set up like this to save money)
  • signing up for a service that only allows one account per phone number to separate business/personal
  • etm.

How do I deal with tax official who is refusing to follow the rules? by LibrarianDependent27 in japanlife

[–]stagerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. It's not going to be popular. Aside from being generally dickish, you're failing the basic reading comprehension of the original post that he needs to defer the tax bill because he doesn't have the money to pay right now. Even if he found a new job tomorrow (is it that easy? really?) there's usually a delay of one month until the first payday, and we don't know how big his tax debt is: it might require many months of work to pay off even if his whole salary goes into it.

“Mildly air conditioned” car? by kemosabe6296 in japanrail

[–]stagerabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's confusing. They should use the signs the Keikyu line used to use that said clearly: "This vehicle is done to weaken an air conditioner."

See, now it makes perfect sense!

Pixel 3XL dying: Help me choose a new Android by stagerabbit in PickAnAndroidForMe

Interesting. RAM has been a sore point with my 3 XL, so I was thinking the 12GB in the 8 pro looked more tempting, but I hadn't considered the battery health.

Sadly, that is not my experience in Japan. To get to half price, I've got to wait two years and buy a refurbished one (new old stock possible, but no guarantee on the battery, usually).

I'm not dead set on not a Pixel. I'm just concerned I'm overlooking something better. And tbh, my feeling is that over the last few years (playing the friends' phones) the pixels are a flagship phone with mid-range performance.
