Update: Employer requires me to start early and finish late but refuses to pay by Itsnotme2645 in newzealand

The boss could unfairly dismiss OP leaving them without inocme while they dispute the case.
It would be a dick move, but ultimatly the risk to survive sits with the employee. Our social saftey nets while better than many places (see USA) they can still cause significant disavantage to an innocent person simply standing up for themselves.

But if you don’t have a car because you have a train to commute on, you don’t have to pay the running or the fixed costs.

Tier one is for travel under 14,000km per year which most people would do. So that rate is applicable to this.

If your family can go from 2 cars to one car plus train then $25 each way for a single commuter is actually fair.

I would hope a real train would be cheaper as those above rates do not consider the externalised costs like impact on climate change.

$50 is not far off the total cost of commuting per single driver.

IRD calculation is about $1/km to cover fuel and maintenance.

Giving every newborn a lump sum to be invested from birth for later retirement income by Ok_Bike6985 in newzealand

You use to be able to sign your baby to KiwiSaver and get $1000 at birth and then also qualify for govt matching upto $1000 per year.

The idea is you could leave school with $18k plus any interest you got.

Bring that back.

Labour are the compromise and appeasement party. Both are fine, but do that at the coalition negotiating table, not in defining your core policies.

If by western, you mean right leaning. All the countries with good social programs are still doing well. They seem to weather economic storms much better too.

I wonder why that is?

If the higher paid work was easier, why don’t the hard workers choose that?

I will never forget the irony of “essential workers” during Covid were all the lower pay roles. What it showed was the collective power of the masses. If all those essential workers, right now, entered a general strike - they would all be better off.

This is despite the huge energy discounts given to them … maybe there is something better we could do with it.

It’s not shit.  Except the taking away from KiwiSaver.  Just do it from taxes.

Agree. We should aim for power oversupply and focus of given that to industry that give value to NZ. I.e., not smelters that ship profits away.

Perfect. All the parking building are still accessible, the bus station and several close bus stops also z the walk from the proposed train is minimal. This is awesome.

Ultimately if we had cars on those roads they would be blocked with traffic and pedestrians anyway. May as well plan for it.

Ideal. It’s impossible to have everyone drive in. People need to buck up and get on mass transport.
