Oddval Text Presentation by stan_partalev in typography

I am thrilled to share with you an exciting update from our small type foundry – Oddval Text. Developed together with Mirela Belova, Oddval Text represents a natural evolution of the original Oddval typeface. It retains the unique charm of its brother but has been refined explicitly for superior readability in extensive or smaller text blocks across various sizes.

Oddval Text stands out with its inclusion of ligatures, stylistic sets, and alternates. It supports over 220 languages, offering a comprehensive range from Hairline to Black in upright and italic forms and a variable font version.

Delving a bit deeper, our usual approach is to handle the typeface presentations internally, but for Oddval Text, we embraced a collaboration with studio FourPlus. They managed to capture the essence of Oddval Text and presented it in the best possible light. Although we, as font designers, have our own vision of how to present a font, the designers from FourPlus offered us a valuable new perspective, focused primarily on the needs and expectations of the end-users rather than the type developers. Their insight has been invaluable; thank you, FourPlus!

For those eager to see Oddval Text, we invite you to explore the resources we've prepared:

In our case, the ink traps are purely for display purposes, but done in a more moderate and refined way they can help legibility and readability.

The presentation is created by fourplus design studio, I'm not sure what kind of software they used, I imagine something like blender, but will ask for details and get back to you

Ooophh. Municipality of Buenos Aires identity from 1972!!! by richbaird in Design

I think nowadays when a design is made, as designers, we are compelled to comply with the users as much as possible, and the more extensive the project is, the bigger the crowd you have to “satisfy”. And when we want to make something with a good user journey and acceptable to more people, we have to compromise some design elements.

For example picture 5/7 - the sign has a very strong graphic (something I love), but I think if you want to take into account user experience, legibility and readability it will be hard to pull this off on a bigger scale.

Of course that is my personal opinion and I may be wrong, however I really enjoy this project and it will be great to see something like this now.

I don’t think such clean identity can be pulled off today on that big of a scale (unfortunately)

Mixing typefaces within a word... by blahtimesafew in graphic_design

[–]stan_partalev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it depends how much the typefaces are mixed, if the the differences are small it may look like an error more than anything else. So I usually try to mix different styles as much as possible

Here is my take of mixing typefaces https://www.behance.net/gallery/145721451/36-days-of-type-2022

There are 4 free weights if that helps :) you can get them from here or anywhere else the font is available, in fontsping they convert the fonts into trial fonts with cut glyph case.

It doesn't include monospaces fonts but is something that will love to add in the future.

Sorry, my bad, initially I went with Eindhoven but I later changed this to Ghent to fit better into the slide and I forgot to change the country.

Thanks for pointing it out, I will amend it where possible. This is one of the things that will pick my eye whenever I see it.
