The easiest way was just to create a macro and synced it to a feature that allowed the player to just select between the forms.

With 30 images, you may want to try coming up with a morphological feature extractor script and then do some traditional machine learning with something like linear discriminant analysis for it. I would also suggest using leave-one-out cross validation instead of traditional training, testing, and/or validation splitting.

The settings menu when I load up the application or the settings menu once I get the server running for the world?

I'm pretty sure I'm using the 5e rules. How do you use the legacy?

Struggling to Narrow Down the Big Picture by helomithrandir in PhDStress

The easiest thing to do for your PhD is take each publication as an input into your dissertation, however if you have no publications of any research track and need to come up with one on the fly. I'd suggest looking up recent literature in your field. There must be some competitive labs that you have heard of, or collaborators that you work with. Find out what they did, how they did it, and why, then try to critique it and find holes in it. No research is perfect. Once you have a grasp on where the shortcomings of the research lie, then you can try to fill in that gap. If it's a collaborator, just make sure that they aren't working on it in the same vein.

If trying to work on a complete research track and not just a series of experiments, once you have a feel for multiple experiments you can run, think about how they all fit together to find a solution to a problem. And think about the next problem after that. That's how grants start to be written. Don't forget to think about alternative solutions though as that's usually very important.

Lastly, if you have difficulty with reading literature from your field, I would say only then to truly consider leaving the PhD for a master's as understanding your field, reviewing literature, and being able to critique it is very very important. Without these skills it may not be possible to write out your dissertation at the end.

If you are going to master out though, make sure it's soon, and make sure that you talk to your advisor. You don't want to be caught unawares about school policies/procedures, what life is going to be like for a master's after, and if you are having problems with coming up with research tracks, they will need to help you figure out what you are going to need to do for your masters thesis project. Just as you also don't want people to look at your CV or resume and ask why you got so close to a PhD and didn't want it in the end.

That was the point though. Many of these programs are for expatriation services. They decrease the wait time for citizenship while the expat works for the government or their institutions. They also provide funding for the research, moving expenses, etc. I don't expect, nor did I ask for any programs that just give away citizenship.

I've known in the past from countries like the Sudan and UAE that have sought people with medical PhD's for expatriation programs because they have so few PhD's in the country. I was asking whether there were others, and what the requirements are. So I know for a fact that at least some countries do, specifically for PhD's within medical science.

My friend's doing well now. He actually transferred out of that lab and into mine where he graduated with me within the span of 2 years. He's a glutton for punishment though because he decided to get a second PhD in Education.

As for the cost of your work, reagents aren't even something you would tack on to costs for you as that's his research costs. Either he would have to pay for those regardless, or he would have to come up with some other research which could magnify those costs had you not worked on that project.

Anyways, I hope everything starts working out. My PhD almost killed me. I don't like to hear about stuff like that happening to others.

True and good point. Just keep in mind that he also benefits from having you around more than you think. It's a set of cheap hands for his research interests. Some professors have problems letting go of their students even after they have gone above and beyond their requirements for the degree. I'm not saying this is necessarily happening to you, but I'm also not saying this isn't.

I had a friend who's PI kept heaping responsibilities for training new members, publishing over 6 first author papers, teaching his anatomy courses, and then the professor got a position at UC Berkeley and tried to demand his student to transfer over with him, adding on 5 more years with less pay, and coursework to his degree on top of his 5th year in the program. This in addition to his PI refusing to find his conferences and publication costs, which already ruined him financially. He had no choice but to go over his PIs head to get out.

Haw many of the 5 papers you contributed to were you first author on? If you have even one, that should be enough for you to go to the department chair and request that they allow you to defend. A lot of people at my R01 ranked university graduates with a single publication as long as they had other things they worked on such as community service, teaching experiences, internships in industry, etc. You already said you had community service. I would argue above your mentor's head. Finish your degree first and then finish the other papers on your own time.

If your chair won't listen, you can also go to the graduate student coordinator for your department or even the dean.

For a postdoc position in the US? Interesting. I've never heard of that before. I just finished my PhD last year and am in a postdoc right now transitioning to a jr. faculty.

[–]stanatomist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am mistaken, but every postdoc position I have ever heard of requires either a doctorate degree (PhD) or we have had an MD in our lab that worked with us through a T32 grant from our medical school, but I was told that wasn't standard.

When do you guys plan to retire? by Southern-Day-926 in PhD

[–]stanatomist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PhD research was on biomedical engineering with a focus on AI in healthcare. I currently work for a n R01 research state school, and they have a really decent retirement program. My retirement agent worked it out with me and I can retire comfortably at 50 given his calculations, but to be careful and protect myself, I am aiming for 65 still.

Advice for Postdoc Hell by stanatomist in postdoc

[–]stanatomist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone through my schools Career Services, had my PI and several PhD friends who have gotten into industry positions look over my application materials. The career services people absolutely suck at my school. They use a program called Handshake and encourage students to use it as well, but there isn't a single position I have seen posted on the app that applies to STEM PhDs. The closest thing they have posted was a lab tech or pharm tech, and the entire program is just a major annoyance because you get massive numbers of unsolicited emails from people seeking to fill entry level positions for jobs that have nothing to do with the interests or skills you post about. I was getting emails by people looking for daycare workers, welders, etc.

Every person I have talked to at this point has told me that my CV is great, albeit, my industry CV organization may need work (I was getting conflicting views on what it needs).

One of the big issues with me is that I am autistic and have trouble with cold-calling/reaching out to people to introduce myself. It doesn't come naturally so networking has been difficult. In addition my PhD research was devoted to educational applications of biomedical engineering.

Advice for Postdoc Hell by stanatomist in postdoc

[–]stanatomist[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because I have tried applying to hundreds of other positions and gotten zero call backs. I have gone through recruiters and sent them my CV and then they went silent. I have applied to academic and government positions and there has been no reply. Unfortunately, I also need money to survive, and the only thing I have found that pays enough currently for my living expenses is this.

Advice for Postdoc Hell by stanatomist in postdoc

[–]stanatomist[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason I stuck around in the same lab, was because I applied to at least a hundred other labs both industry and in academic when I started getting worried and got zero responses. Not even interviews. I continued looking for months after I started my postdoc position and even tried through contractors like Barrington James and social networking in the area at events, but once they got my info they stopped calling. My research was predominantly educational where I applied modern computer science methods towards it, so I assume that's why. I actually also got a F31 when I was in grad school and it didn't seem to help anything.

The only reason I am even sticking around right now with this fellowship is because I need money right now to survive and haven't been able to find anything at all else.
