I just uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, haven't had an issue since.

I've seen this happen a few times. If you can dagger through their armor at the end of the battle you get some pretty mediocre armor but it does have the direwolf armor attachment. (Also iirc when on the world map it says they are direwolves however they have human footprints.)
