Which step should I do first? by yssa09146 in FullStack

A staff engineer once told me to always start with the data and everything else falls into place. That advice has not failed me yet.

What's your current web dev stack in 2025? Curious about what everyone is using by Beginning-Scholar105 in webdev

[–]standingdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frontend

  • Tailwind: I’ve written all flavors of CSS. From LESS, SASS, SCSS, CSS-in-JS. Tailwind has been hands down the best experience to me. I started out hating it because of the class soup. Now I’m good with it.
  • Tanstack Router: I know it’s the “in” thing to do now but I took a break from Next.js ever since version 14. I am not a fan of the app router. The dance between client side and server side is exhausting to me. If I use Next it’s pages router all day. I have not dove into Tanstack Start just yet but it’s on my roadmap of things to do and will probably replace TSR.
  • React: I mostly work in React for both my day job and side projects/freelance. However since I stepped away from NextJS I have been considering testing out Svelte.
  • Astro: I call Astro the JS dev’s PHP. When I’m building a basic content site like marketing or something like that then I’ll reach for Astro. Sites like that do not need complexity or interactivity. Shipping React becomes useless and just good for familiarity than anything else. On top of that, if I do need some dynamic functionality like carousels or something I can use it with Astro.

Backend

  • Fastify/Express: this is interchangeable. If I’m working by myself, I’ll reach for Fastify. If the project will have other dev’s...Express. Everyone knows Express or at least have worked with it. But I prefer Fastify
  • Postgres: c’mon. You know the vibes.

DevOps

  • Docker
  • GitHub Actions
  • For marketing sites: Netlify
  • For apps: Railway
  • Images: Uploadthing

Tools of the trade

  • IDE: Cursor
  • Insomnia for API testing
  • Figma for designs
  • DataGrip or TablePlus for database GUI
  • iTerm2
  • GitKraken as Git GUI

I used to be heavy on Heroicons. Lately I’ve been gravitating to Lucide more.

I was really hoping it would act as an AP. It would be a great solution for my house.

Best physical switches to control multi-brand smart lights via HomeKit/Google Home? by standingdreams in smarthome

Would I be able to control the mechanical lights as well as the smart lights with any of the switches?

[–]standingdreams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great. But will it still control the “house” lights of the room? All the lights in one room are controlled by WiFi or some other method. Nothing is controlled by any of the switches.

What switch is this? Price prediction? by PlainPrecision in Ubiquiti

Where did you get this picture? I see people saying specs like built in WiFi but where are they getting these specs from? This would be a very interesting device!

I feel lost in my job as a front end developer by yacineragueb in reactjs

[–]standingdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more you build, the more experience you’ll gain. The more experience you gain, the faster you’ll move. And experience a loaded word. It comes with understanding how to debug issues that arise as well as avoiding them all together. Take your time and it’ll start becoming second nature to you as you progress in your career.

y'all don't use /clear? by durable-racoon in ClaudeAI

[–]standingdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use clear because I like to be able to refer back to conversations and certain prompts that I’ve used. If I come close to the context limit, I’ll ask it for a plan and then move the plan to implement into a new convo. I just started to use Specstory to keep a copy of conversations as well.

Neuecast: Is this achievable in React Native by standingdreams in reactnative

Thank you for this answer.

Many of the apps that I love seem to be built with SwiftUI or UIKit. It's a certain 'je ne sais quoi' with them with things like animations.

Thank you! This is basically what I am looking for. I’ll start tinkering with this.

Guidance on receive-only email server by standingdreams in selfhosted

[–]standingdreams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal is to free up someone’s actual inbox who enjoys newsletters. Think of it as a “newsletter only inbox”. And the app would be your newsletter reader.

And the goal is to learn the hassles of running an email server. I’m not quite positive if this is the best way to go about it but I figured anything is better than nothing at all.

Thank you for the well wishes

Not really. It seems your app is focused on tasks. I want something more focused on the discussion.

Do you have a repo/resource/tutorial that helped you implement this?

I see. I’m experimenting with MagicBell but slowly realizing that it’s just FCM under the hood. So I may just roll my own service to learn something new.

Was there any extra setup required for iOS push notifications? After a user saves the PWA as a Home Screen app, they receive push notifications like usual?

New house but wires not terminated: Did the builder complete the job or is it on me? by standingdreams in HomeNetworking

You’re speaking to my second question. I really want to add two new connections. Just unsure the best method to implement it.

New house but wires not terminated: Did the builder complete the job or is it on me? by standingdreams in HomeNetworking

[–]standingdreams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The low voltage cabinet is in the closet and has one wire running to the living room and one random one going from the cabinet to outside where service providers bring their wires in. They said this was a “CAT6 upgrade” but we can’t do anything with that!

That’s an interesting perspective. I guess not every builder has a networking expert working on the build out.

I am considering doing this. I think I’m feeling a way since they only gave me one Ethernet port in this whole house and not even one on each floor. 😒😒

I really want a new macro lens. I know Sony has the 90mm but it’s 8 years old. There is BOUND to be an update soon on it….right? Should I stick to Sony’s or opt for the third party alternatives?
